Dropping Classes

When can I drop a class?

For a schedule pertaining to fee refunds, see Money Matters: Fee Refunds. The deadlines in each term to drop a class in good Academic Standing. If you are enrolled in The Chang School classes, please consult The Chang School calendar.

FALL

The last day to drop a single-term class is Friday, November 16.

WINTER

The last day to drop a multi-term class A/B combination is Friday, February 8.

The last day to drop a single-term class A/B combination is Friday, March 29.

SPRING/SUMMER

May 31 is the final date to drop a single-term class beginning in May.

July 12 is the final date to drop a multi-term class A/B combination beginning in May.

July 19 is the final date to drop a single-term class beginning in June.

Can I drop a class after the final drop deadline?

Normally no, however, requests for a retroactive class drop will be considered on an exception basis only upon receipt of a written request from you to your department/school. This request must be supported by documentation verifying the medical reasons (Ryerson Medical Certificate found in the Forms Cabinet www.ryerson.ca/currentstudents/forms/index.html) or unforseen circumstances which prevented you from dropping the class(s) by the deadline. The documentation should describe the dates and duration of the illness, should describe the impact it had on the student's ability to drop the class by the deadline, and any other information that the physician or other third party professional directly involved with the circumstance considers relevant and appropriate. The department/school Chair/Program Director will provide a recommendation to the Registrar's Office: Student Records. Requests submitted without supporting documentation will not be considered. There will be consultation with the student's program department before a final decision is made.

How do I drop a course?

To drop a class, follow the instructions on the web at www.ryerson.ca/RAMSSsupport/ugrad_grad/academics/drop_a_class/.

Print a copy for your records.

Before you drop a course/class, check:

The DEADLINE to drop classes. Deadlines can be found in the Calendar or in this Guide;

Is the course a prerequisite for something you plan to take next term?

When is this class going to be offered next?

If you are on Probation, does your plan of study allow you to drop this class? If you are not sure, ask;

If you are expecting to graduate at the end of the term, make sure the course is not a requirement for graduation;

Will dropping this class affect your financial aid and/or scholarship?

If you stop doing the work required for a class without officially dropping it, you will receive an "F" in that course.

Will I get a fee refund if I drop a course?

Eligibility for a fee refund depends on when you drop the course and the percentage of course load you are taking. See Money Matters: Fee Refunds for refund information. You must apply for a refund if you are entitled to it. The Enrollment Services and Student Fees Office, POD-64, 416-979-5136, can answer any questions you might have.
