Examinations

Ryerson's official Examination Policy and Procedures can be found in Academic Matters: Examination Policy and Procedures.

How do I find out when my exams are scheduled?

Final exams are usually held at the end of each term for one-term courses, and in April for multi-term courses. Exams in continuing education courses are usually held in the last scheduled class.

Each term, Ryerson schedules approximately 500 examinations. You can get your exam schedule approximately one month before examinations at www.ryerson.ca/service/exams or my.ryerson.ca (RAMSS tab).

Check your examination schedule regularly for any changes.

Check your exam schedule to make sure you have no conflicts in scheduling (that is, that you do not?have more than one exam scheduled at the same time) or conflicts with Religious Observances.

Ryerson policy prohibits scheduling any exams or tests in the final week of day classes or on the final Saturday or Sunday before the exam period.

What do I do if I have a conflict in the exam schedule?

If you find you have a conflict in exam scheduling, report it to your program department/school.

If you have an exam scheduled on a religious holiday, or holy day, you should follow the procedure listed in Academic Matters: Accommodation of Student Religious, Aboriginal and spiritual Observance Obligations.

If you have three or more exams scheduled for one day (not including any continuing education courses you might be taking), report it to your program department/ school. Attempts will be made to reschedule, but there is no guarantee that this can be done.

What are my responsibilities for exams?

You are responsible for making sure you are in the right place at the right time to write your exams.

You must be prepared to identify yourself with your Ryerson OneCard (Ryerson's official I.D. card). If you do not have your card for whatever reason, Enrollment Services and Student Fees can give you a temporary ID. You will need to produce other identification, preferably with a picture.

Rules for proper conduct in exams and penalties for misconduct are in the Ryerson Student Academic and Non-Academic Codes of Conduct.

What should I do if I have to miss a test or exam?

Sometimes students do miss tests or exams, usually because of illness or personal/family emergency. If you must miss a test or exam, you should:

E-mail/Telephone your instructor(s) as soon as you know you will not be able to write an exam. It is important that you contact your instructor(s) so that you can make alternative arrangements.

If you cannot reach your instructor(s), try calling or emailing their department/school office(s) and leave a detailed message.

This is important, so be persistent!

You must present medical or other documentation within three (3) working days of the missed test or exam.

What do I do if I need my exams to be held in the Access Centre for Students with Disabilities?

Visit the Access Centre for Students with Disabilities for detailed instruction on arrangements between your program and course faculty.

This must be done immediately after exam schedule is released on RAMSS.

What alternative arrangements can I make when I miss a test or exam?

You have a number of options:

You should normally be able to arrange another date to write the test or exam. You must make this arrangement with your instructor. You should note that there are consequences for missing a schedule make-up test or exam. Please see Senate Policy 145, The Course Management Policy.

If your alternative test/exam takes place after the instructor hands in grades, you should receive an Incomplete (INC). Be sure to discuss this with your Instructor(s).

Many times students decide they will write their exams in spite of illness or personal/family emergency. Lack of preparation or concentration keeps them from doing well in their exams. If you have any questions about whether you are fit enough to write a test or exam, seek advice from:

Your doctor or the Ryerson Medical Centre in case of illness.

The Centre for Student Development and Counselling in case of personal emergency.

See Academic Matters: Missing Classes for information about work missed during the term.

Can I fail a course because I miss an exam?

You will not fail a course only because you missed the exam for reasons beyond your control, if you follow the above guidelines.

Will exams be rescheduled if there's an emergency?

It may be necessary to reschedule final examinations in the event of an emergency (i.e. inclement weather). This may apply to a single exam, a full exam period, or a full day of exams. If an examination has been cancelled in the event of an emergency it will be the students' responsibility to check the Examination Schedule on my.ryerson.ca (RAMSS tab) to determine when and where the rescheduled exam will be held.
