Graduation

It does not happen automatically. You must apply to graduate at my.ryerson.ca (RAMSS).

Why do I have to apply to graduate?

Your application to graduate signals Curriculum Advising that you will be ready to graduate at the end of the term/year.

To identify applicable Minor requested.

To ensure your name on record is what you want to have printed on your graduation document.

Remember to complete the transaction by clicking 'Submit Application' button and copying the last page as your confirmation. Also remember to 'Add a Minor' if you are currently working towards one and are planning to graduate with a Minor. To see that you have applied, go to the Student Centre (on RAMSS) and look under 'Checklist'.

What are the requirements for graduation?

1. You must have successfully completed all the courses in your program's curriculum.

2. You must achieve a cumulative grade point average of 2.00. Midwifery students must achieve a grade point average of 2.33

3. You must fulfill Ryerson's residency requirements: complete at least the final half of your program's curriculum at Ryerson, and complete it within the maximum time period.

If you are in a full-time program, the maximum time is the normal number of years required for full-time study after admission, times two. For example: if you are in a four-year program, you have a maximum of eight years from the time you were first admitted to graduate.

If you are in a part-time program, the maximum is the number of single-term courses or equivalent in the curriculum, divided by three. If the number does not work out evenly, it will be rounded up to the next number.

For example: if the total number of single-term courses in your program is 40, you have a maximum of 14 years to graduate unless there is a variation as stated in your program information.

4. At the time of graduation, you must not have any outstanding debts or obligations to Ryerson (see GRADE WITHHOLDS for more information). Students owing more than $10 will not receive their degree/diploma/certificate at Convocation. They will be given a Withhold notice instead. Students must present a Withhold clearance in order to pick up their document at a later date.

PLEASE NOTE: If you are eligible to graduate from your program, regardless of whether you have completed the requirements to also obtaina minor within your program of study, you will still graduate from the program.

Are there any variations I need to consider?

The criteria for graduation are the same across Ryerson, with some exceptions. Students in the following programs should consult the calendar for a description of the exceptions in their program:

Child and Youth Care

Midwifery

Collaborative Nursing

Nutrition and Food

Social Work

Refer to the applicable full- or part-time undergraduate calendar for specific information relating to your program, go online at www.ryerson.ca/calendar.

If you missed an application to graduate deadline, you may request a Third Party Letter, which will confirm your eligibility to graduate and/or have your official transcript indicate that you have completed your graduation requirements.

What are the requirements to graduate "With Honours"?

You must achieve an overall cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or higher.

This academic distinction will be recorded on your transcript and graduation award.

Can I graduate with a Minor?

Yes, but the Minor will only be reflected on your official transcript. It will not be shown on the degree. For more information see Academic Matters: Minors.

How can I make sure that I enroll in all the right courses I need to graduate?

If you are a full-time undergraduate student entering your final year and need to know what courses you have yet to complete, run an Advisement Report. See Academic Matters: Curriculum Advising Office.

If you are a part-time undergraduate student or enrolled in a certificate and need to know what courses you have yet to complete in order to graduate, you can request a manual degree audit prior to entering your final semester or class.

How will I know if I am eligible to graduate?

Once you have applied to graduate, a final evaluation will be made of your academic progress to date and your eligibility to graduate will be determined for the convocation term you applied for. For Spring Graduation, select Winter Term, e.g. Winter 2013. For Fall Graduation, select Spring/Summer Term, e.g. Spring/Summer 2013. If courses are outstanding, a letter will be sent prior to the end of your final semester.

What if I'm a Part-time student?

Prior to enrolling in the final year of your program, (or completion of at least 75% of a part-time program), Part-time students should apply to the Office of Curriculum Advising for an Advisement Report. This Report is intended to ensure that all program requirements will have been met by the end of the last semester/year of the program. Part-time students are advised to request this Advisement Report by April 30th, students will receive notification of any outstanding courses by Course Enrollment Week in August. The Fall deadline for report requests is October 31 for notification by the Winter enrollment period. A late fee will be charged after the deadline. Go to www.ryerson.ca/forms to download a request form.

What if I have issues with my Advisement Report?

See your program department immediately.

How will I know if I am not eligible to graduate?

A letter outlining any requirements you are missing will be sent to you after your final grades have been submitted.

A Curriculum Advising Officer is assigned to your program and is available to discuss any concerns you might have regarding your application. You may contact them at gradinfo@ryerson.ca

If you have applied and are not eligible to graduate, please remember to re-apply for the appropriate future convocation.

How will I know if I am graduating?

You will receive a letter inviting you and two guests to attend the Convocation ceremonies. The letter should arrive about two weeks before the ceremonies. See section on The Graduation Ceremony (Convocation) for ceremony information and tickets.

Can I get a letter confirming my eligibility to graduate?

If you have successfully completed all requirements for graduation and have not officially graduated, and find that you need confirmation for employment or other purposes, you may request a letter and/or notification of completion of requirements from Curriculum Advising. There is a $20 (subject to change) charge for each eligibility letter produced by Curriculum Advising. Go to www.ryerson.ca/forms and download a Third Party Letter request form. If you have a Service Indicator (Withhold) on your record, this service will not be available.

What name will appear on my award?

The name that you used on your application for admission, unless you have requested a name change through Enrollment Services and Student Fees.

The name that will be used on all graduation information, appears at the top of the on-line Application to Graduate. Check this name carefully. This is EXACTLY as it will look on all graduation award documents (your degree), transcripts, and correspondence. If you want to make any changes to your graduation name (initials, hyphens, periods, married name, etc.), you must submit a name change form, accompanied by appropriate and applicable official documentation to Enrollment Services and Student Fees by the applicable deadline dates. See Significant Dates section of this Guide.
