The course I want to take is not available at Ryerson. Can I take a course at another post-secondary institution?

If you are considering taking a course at another post-secondary institution for credit at Ryerson, you will need to apply for a Letter of Permission ahead of time. This is a document that informs an institution that you are a Ryerson student who will be using the credit toward your Ryerson degree.
How do I apply for a letter of permission?

  | To apply, download an application form at www.ryerson.ca/forms. The fee is $40, (subject to change). |
  | You will need to include a photocopy of the host institution's current course description. If necessary, you might be able to find a course description in The Library or the Centre for Student Development and Counselling, which have calendars from other institutions or from the internet. |
  | Depending on the teaching department, you may expedite the process by obtaining the appropriate signature prior to submission of this form. Please check with Curriculum Advising, 416-979-5151. |
  | The course must be taken in the term for which it was approved. |
  | You need to achieve a minimum grade to obtain the credit at Ryerson. Refer to your Letter of Permission. |
 | Pre-planning is important. Be sure to allow plenty of time for processing your request; two weeks if you are applying in person, one month if you are applying by mail.

|
What do I do when I have finished the course?

You must complete a Transfer Credit Application form within three (3) months of completing the course, and provide an officially certified transcript of your grade to the Transfer Credit Unit so that your credit can be added to your record at Ryerson. Applications for transfer credit are available at www.ryerson.ca/forms.
May I get a Letter of Permission while I am on REQUIRED TO WITHDRAW Standing?

No. You may be able to take courses elsewhere, but if you take them while you are REQUIRED TO WITHDRAW, you will not be able to use them for credit at Ryerson.
  | If you have already been granted a Letter of Permission and then receive REQUIRED TO WITHDRAW Standing, your Letter of Permission will become invalid. |
How will the credit be recorded? Will it affect my GPA?

Any credit granted by Letter of Permission will be recorded as a CRT on your Ryerson record. It will not be included in calculating your grade point average.
 | Repeating courses on "Letters of Permission" are included in the "Repeated Course Count".
