Transfer Credits

Extensive Transfer Credit information is available at www.ryerson.ca/transfercredits.

Can I apply courses I have taken elsewhere to my Ryerson program?

Yes, if:

1. You think the courses you have taken are similar to those offered in your program.

2. If the course was taken at an accredited post-secondary institution.

3. You completed a course at an accredited university with a grade of 60% or higher (where 60% equals 'C-'), or you completed a course at an accredited college with a grade of 70% or higher (where 70% equals 'B-').

4. Your course was not used as a basis for admission or for previous Transfer Credit.

Will all Transfer Credits that I have been granted, be used towards my program's requirements?

No, not all Credits granted are applicable to degree requirements. To determine which courses are applicable to your degree, full-time students should run an Advisement Report. Part-time students should request a Manual Advisement Report. See Academic Matters: Graduation.

If the Transfer Credit(s) is not applicable to your degree, you may wish to petition your program department for a Course Directive or Course Substitution to allow the credit to be used towards your graduation requirements.

How many credits can I apply to my Ryerson program?

At least 50% of your program must be completed at Ryerson. In other words, you will not be able to transfer more than 50% of Ryerson requirements from elsewhere.

If you are planning to take a course elsewhere, see Academic Matters: Letter of Permission.

How will Transfer Credits affect my GPA?

A Transfer Credit will be recorded on your record as CRT. It will not be calculated in your Grade Point Average.

What is Advanced Standing?

Advanced Standing means you have been admitted to a level higher than first year, first semester or to a part-time degree completion program. All or some of your post-secondary studies will have been used as your basis of admission. Only those courses not used as a basis for admission or Transfer Credit may be used to apply for further Transfer Credit, providing you meet the residency requirement (see Academic Matters: Transfer Credits for more information).

How do I apply for Transfer Credits?

All students who have completed post-secondary level coursework are eligible to apply for Transfer Credits.

Students who have completed course work from several Ontario colleges and Canadian universities will submit online Transfer Credit applications.

Complete application instructions are available online at www.ryerson.ca/transfercredits.

Application Deadlines for Transfer Credits are:

Students are strongly advised to apply for Transfer Credits as soon as possible because confirming Transfer Credits early facilitates course planning and prevents students from enrolling in courses that could be eligible for Transfer Credit.

Newly Approved Students

The final date for newly approved students to apply for Transfer Credit and have the results for the start of the 2012/2013 academic year is Friday August 10, 2012. Applications received after this date will not have the results for the start of the Fall 2012 term with the exception of students approved after August 10, 2012.

The final date for students to apply for Transfer Credit and have the results for the start of the Winter 2013 term, is December 1, 2012.

Students approved Fall 2012 have until April 30, 2013 to apply for any remaining Transfer Credits.

Returning Students

If you are a returning student your deadline was April 30 of the year following your admission to apply for all Transfer Credits.

If you neglected to apply for all your possible Transfer Credits, you can do so with the $50 (subject to change) Transfer Credit Late Fee.

Refer to the Significant Dates section of the current Undergraduate Calendar for all applicable dates and late fees concerning Transfer Credits.

How do I find out about the status of my application?

Transfer Credit decisions will be available via 'View Transfer Credit Report' in RAMSS. Allow a minimum of one to two weeks after submission of applications before viewing this report.

You will be contacted in writing if further information is required for your application.

If you have a question, you can email tcredits@ryerson.ca or call 416-598-5959

What do I do if I am granted Transfer Credits?

You should first determine what Transfer Credits apply towards your program; full-time students should run an Advisement Report on RAMSS and part-time students should request a Manual Advisement Report.

What do I do if I wish to take a course for which I have been granted Transfer Credit?

You must put in a request to cancel the Transfer Credit, in writing, to the Transfer Credit Unit Office.

What do I do if I am not granted Transfer Credits?

You have the right to appeal, but only decisions with a rejected status can be appealed as long as additional supporting documentation can be provided. Appeals must be made in writing to the Transfer Credit Unit office and must include:

a detailed letter outlining the reasons for the appeal based on course content issues

appeals will not be considered based upon personal opinion

all students have one year from when the original denial (rejection) is posted on RAMSS to appeal the decision

normally, students cannot appeal a denial (rejected) decision that was based upon accreditation of the external institution, or if the minimum grade has not been met.

Will Transfer Credits affect my fees?

Your fees will be affected only if your course load range changes. (See the tables in Money Matters: 2012-2013 Fees Tables Breakdown for more information about course load ranges, or contact the Enrollment Services and Student Fees Office, POD-64, 416-979-5136) for more information.
