What do I do if I want to "drop out" of school?

If you are considering quitting school, the first thing you should do is weigh your decision with the help of your program department/school and the Centre for Student Development and Counselling JOR-07, (416-979-5195). If you do decide you want to withdraw from school for any reason after classes begin, you must let Ryerson know.

What happens if I stop going to classes without officially withdrawing?

You will receive failed grades in all enrolled classes. This will affect your Academic Standing and your chances of returning to study at Ryerson or elsewhere. All fees assessed will be valid and due.

What do I do if I decide not to continue my studies?

If you have completed the Course Intention request process for the next academic year, you must inform Enrollment Services and Student Fees by submitting an official Application to Withdraw (permanent or short-term), so that they can drop your Course Intention request for the upcoming academic year. If you do not drop the courses, you will receive FNA grades, and be required to pay tuition fees for the courses.

I am in a part-time program and will not be taking any classes this term. Do I have to withdraw?

No, but you must drop any classes you selected during the course intention request period. You will continue to receive enrollment information for the next three terms. If you do not enroll in a class within the next three terms, you will be dropped from the program and you must apply for re-admission if you wish to return (see Academic Matters: Re-Admission for information on this process).

If you have enrolled for a class and have decided you do not want to continue, you must drop the class (see Academic Matters: Dropping Classes for information on this process). If you do not drop the class (es) you will receive FNA grades, and be required to pay for them.

If you do not inform the university, you will be academically and financially responsible for all courses, charges, and late fees.


How do I withdraw?

Again, we recommend you discuss your decision with your program department/school and the Centre for Student Development and Counselling.

To officially withdraw from Ryerson you need to fill out an Application to Withdraw form, available at Enrollment Services and Student Fees or online at www.ryerson.ca/essr/forms.

You will need signatures from:

Your program department/school;

Financial Aid and Awards Office.

Student Residence (if applicable)

You then have to submit the completed form with signatures by the appropriate deadlines to Enrollment Services and Student Fees for their processing.

Can I withdraw for just one semester or year?

Yes. You must fill in a Short-Term Withdrawal form available at www.ryerson.ca/essr/forms. Students should be aware that even though they are not attending Ryerson for one or more semesters, they continue to use up the time span calculated to complete their program of study. For more information on time-span please refer to the Graduation Requirements section of the Undergraduate Calendar.

What happens to my financial aid if I withdraw?

You must advise the Student Financial Assistance Office if you withdraw. The amount of OSAP you are eligible to receive will be recalculated based on the time that you were attending up until the actual withdrawal date. In most situations, you will have received more OSAP funding than you were entitled to receive. Any overpayment on your OSAP account will be deducted from future loans you receive (if applicable) or you will be required to repay the overpaid amount.

Any tuition fee refund that you would be eligible to receive will be directed to your National Student Loan Service Centre to pay down your loan and overpayment on your OSAP account file.
