Security and Emergency Services

HOW TO REACH US

In Person: At the main Security and Emergency Services Operations Centre Desk at 111 Bond Street.

Telephone: If you are on campus, dial extension 5001/5040. If you are in an EMERGENCY situation, Security may be contacted by calling "80" from any Ryerson telephone or by pressing one of the auto dial buttons, #1 (red) for emergencies, #5 (yellow) for general information or for the Walk and Watch program, (free of charge), from any pay telephone on the Ryerson campus. The emergency "Blue Phones" located around the exterior of the campus are also a free call to Security. The main security operations centre is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Someone is always available to answer your security inquiry.

KEEPING YOURSELF SAFE

Report suspicious people or activity to security IMMEDIATELY. A timely security response can help prevent a crime, or save a life.

If you are working in an isolated area, lock doors whenever possible and don't let anyone in you don't know. Do not leave doors propped open.

If you think that you are being followed on campus, go to the nearest Ryerson telephone and call Security and Emergency Services at "80" or by pressing the auto dial button, #1 (red) for emergencies, free of charge from any pay telephone on the Ryerson Campus. The emergency "Blue Phones" located around the exterior of the campus are also a free call to Security and Emergency Services.

Don't take shortcuts through isolated areas. Keep to well-travelled routes, and well-lit areas. Walk near the curb and away from buildings, doorways, and bushes.

Do not overburden yourself with packages, a bulky purse, or a knapsack.

Use caution in conversations with strangers. Avoid giving your name, address, or class schedule.

Be alert in washrooms, especially in isolated areas. Check for strangers while you are still near the door. Whenever possible, ask a friend to accompany you.

If you plan to drink, make plans ahead of time for getting home. Do not accept drinks that you have not seen poured yourself. Avoid leaving your drink unattended. Do not leave with people you do not feel comfortable.

Don't carry large sums of cash.

Let somebody know where you are going and check in with them when you reach your destination.

Do not hitchhike or accept a ride from a stranger.

If you feel uncomfortable about who is on an elevator, don't get in. Wait until the next elevator arrives.

If you do encounter difficulties with somebody on an elevator, push as many floor buttons as you can, and/or push the emergency switch which, will set off an alarm bell outside of the elevator. The switch also calls the main Security and Emergency Services Desk and puts you in contact with an officer. All campus elevators are equipped with these security phones. Remember to never hit the red "STOP" button, as this will stop the elevator immediately.

EMERGENCIES/CRIMES ON CAMPUS

Dial "80": from any on-campus phone extension, and free-phone by pressing the auto dial button, #1 (red) for emergencies, free of charge from any pay telephone on the Ryerson campus. The emergency "Blue Phones" located around the exterior of the campus are also a free call to Security and Emergency Services. Explain the emergency. If it is safe to do so, remain on the line until the call is terminated by a dispatcher. Please take the time to answer any questions the dispatcher asks, as they are important in helping to ensure responding officers have needed information, and that other appropriate emergency services are dispatched if needed. Our location-locator program knows exactly where you're calling from, regardless of what phone you are calling from, so remain at this location, if it is safe to do so.

Security and Emergency Services has officers trained in crisis resolution, emergency medical care, and suicide intervention, as well as general law enforcement and security related training.

On Campus Payphones: Press one of the auto dial buttons, #1 (red) for emergencies, #5 (yellow) for general information or for the Walk and Watch program, state your location, (there is a sign above all payphones that describes your location) and remain on the line and at this location, if it is safe to do so. Emergency services will be dispatched to your specified location. (Remember, finding a room locked does not constitute an emergency.)

KEEPING YOUR BELONGINGS SAFE

Mark your name or other personal identification on personal items of value. Marked items are less likely to be stolen.

Do not leave valuable items in your locker.

Keep your possessions with you. Don't leave wallets or purses unprotected or out of your sight.

Don't carry large amounts of cash as there are bank machines on campus if you need to top up your cash supply.

WOMEN'S SELF DEFENSE COURSE

This course is for women only. The cost to take the two-day course is $20. This course is a system of personal safety education involving a practical blend of threat avoidance strategies and real-world assault resistance tactics for women. The focus of the course of instruction is on the development of easily mastered personal safety skills, which are safely practiced within a comfortable learning environment, and the coupling of those physical skills with a threat assessment process, which will increase personal safety awareness. Over a period of twelve to fifteen hours, participants will learn threat assessment techniques and personal safety awareness. Participants will also learn physical self-defense drills like how to kick, punch, break out of wrist grabs, choke holds, bear hugs, and some ground defense. Following that, the participants have the choice to participate in realistic simulations. This allows the participant a chance to practice what they have learned in a realistic situation.

The maximum number of spaces per course is 15 students. Ryerson Security and Emergency Services also have self defense and threat avoidance classes for men and a special program for children ages 5-11 years. This is a personal empowerment course which identifies safety awareness and self defense. Parents are encouraged to participate with their child.

If you are interested in taking any of these courses, or in learning more about other programs not mentioned here, please contact Chris Beninger, Keith Christie, or Tanya Fermin at 416-979-5040.

Ryerson Security and Emergency Services now have a Child Safety Program called radKIDS, for kids ages 5-11. This is a personal empowerment course which identifies safety awareness and self defense. Parents are encouraged to participate with their child. Please contact Tanya Fermin at 416-979-5040 for more information.
