To provide a wide range of opportunities to get more out of Ryerson, the Students' Union builds a student community and school spirit through great events, convenient cost-saving services and campaigns to improve our education. Run by a democratically elected student Board of Directors, the Students' Union works for its members to advocate for student rights and offers many opportunities for students to get involved in both volunteer and paid capacities. The Canadian Federation of Students unites more than 500,000 students at college and university campuses from coast to coast. There are more than 300,000 student members of the Federation in Ontario. Through the Federation, Ryerson students work together with students' unions at other institutions to lobby and influence change to improve the quality of education in Canada. Membership in the Federation also entitles students to a wide range of cost-saving services, such as the International Student Identity Card (ISIC) that provides travel discounts, and the discount StudentSaver Card - all are just a few benefits of membership. The membership fee for the Federation is collected along with your fees to the Ryerson Students' Union.
THE STUDENT CAMPUS CENTRE The Student Campus Centre (SCC) fully integrates with the historic Oakham House and has entrances on both Church and Gould Street. It is the hub of student life on campus and houses the Ryerson Students' Union, its services and student groups offices. Many of the events, services and activities that the RSU offers are situated within this building, conveniently located at 55 Gould Street. Regular events include: the Parade and Picnic outdoor concert, student groups day, pub nights, Open Mic in the Ram in the Rye, the Multicultural Show, Global Issues Awareness Week, guest speakers, ski trips, movie nights, workshops, and much more - all year round! Through the RSU Education Issues Committee, students lobby the University and the governments to reduce tuition fees, lower student debt, and address a variety of other student issues. If you are an RSU member, get involved to make change! Some issues that the Students' Union has worked on include: freezing and lowering sky-rocketing tuition and ancillary fees, lobbying for better post-secondary education funding, protecting students' academic and individual rights; along with ensuring Ryerson student groups have access to space for activities on campus. These groups receive funding and other resources from the Students' Union. Each group entrusts an elected student executive to run the student group; elections take place annually in the Spring. A list of all campus groups is posted on the RSU website at www.rsuonline.ca/campusgroups. Information can also be found in the Members Handbook and Dayplanner and at the RSU office, SCC-311. Course Unions Course Unions are groups that bring together students in a particular program, acting as a student council for the department, each Course Union seeks to address specific departmental issues. As a full-time Ryerson student you are automatically a member of both the RSU and the Course Union for your program. Course Unions are funded by the RSU and through their own fundraising activities. Elections for the Course Union's Executive take place annually in the Spring. Clubs and Cultural Groups Clubs and cultural groups at Ryerson offer many things to many students. From pubs and parties to talent contests, sports tournaments, peer support, guest lecturers, and so much more! There are currently more than 60 clubs and groups operating on campus. In recognition of this marginalization, the Ryerson Students' Union established equity-based groups known as the Equity Service Groups. The groups are comprised of the Community Food Room, RyeACCESS, RyePRIDE, Students Against Racism, and the Women's Centre. The handbook has everything students need to know about convenient cost-saving services, great events, campus groups, educational issues and how to get involved. The day planner is handy to note course times, assignments, exams and other important dates. Ryerson collects specific and limited personal information on behalf of the Ryerson Students' Union (RSU) and discloses it to RSU for certain purposes. The RSU uses this information to automatically enroll full-time students in the RSU Members' Health and Dental Plan. Full-time students are on the Plan unless you opt-out (see below) by providing proof of alternative coverage. The charge for the Health and Dental Plan premiums appear as a separate fee on the student Fees statement for all full-time students. Students who have completed an opt-out form previously, will receive a refund cheque in early November. Health benefits include: coverage of prescription drugs, orthotics, ambulance services, travel insurance, massage therapy, chiropractic care and physiotherapy. Dental benefits include coverage of an annual exam (one unit of scaling, polishing, check-up, x-rays), fillings, extraction of two wisdom teeth, crowns and root canals. For full details on Plan coverage, please consult the Members' Health and Dental Benefits Guide before visiting a health care provider or dentist. A copy of the Benefits Guide is available at the Member Services Office, located in the Student Campus Centre Lobby, 55 Gould Street. To utilize health insurance benefits, members must obtain their RSU Care Card available on the RSU website or at the Member Services Office; get your card laminated for free at CopyRITE, located in the basement of the Student Campus Centre. Plan coverage is yearly and extends from September 1 to August 31 of each academic year. This is where students can save and make money by buying and selling used textbooks. The Used Book Room operates all year, with extended hours at the start of each semester. Students wishing to sell used texts can drop off their books for sale at any time of year. The Used Book Room offers consignment sales. The Card provides access to discounts on domestic air travel at Travel CUTS, and a 25% discount on Greyhound bus trips. As a member of the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS), all Ryerson Students' Union members receive the card at no additional charge. With over 500 discounts in Toronto and thousands across Canada, StudentSaver helps students save money on everyday purchases like books, clothing, food, and entertainment. Members simply take their Card to any of the participating businesses to receive discounts ranging from 10% to 35% off goods and services. The free StudentSaver Discount Card, a service of the Canadian Federation of Students, is distributed inside the RSU's Members' Handbook and Day Planner annually, at the start of the Fall semester.
OAKHAM HOUSE Location: 63 Gould Street (corner of Gould and Church) Phone: 416-979-5250 Oakham House is the campus community and cultural centre for the use of Ryerson Students' Union members, part-time and continuing education students, staff, faculty and alumni. The House offers meeting facilities for the Ryerson Students' Union, Course Unions and Student Groups. From time to time, people and organizations from the surrounding community may also book the facilities at Oakham House to host a variety of events. Canadian students have long recognized that education goes beyond the classroom and that travel can be an intrinsic part of the educational process.

The Students' Union employs a full-time advocate to help its members navigate this process. The RSU Student Issues & Advocacy Coordinator provides free and confidential advice for undergraduate and graduate members. Please contact your Students' Union for more information on appeals. Consultation with the RSU's in-house lawyer is available to all members for individual legal advice and assistance. Although time constraints do not permit formal representation outside of the Students' Union office, our lawyer offers advice, communicates on members' behalf, and drafts documents with respect to virtually any legal issue, including family, criminal, immigration, landlord and tenant, corporate, real estate, intellectual property, debt issues, and problems with government agencies. This is a free service to all members of the Ryerson Students' Union. A Tax Clinic is organized each March by the Students' Union to provide members with advice and assistance in completing their personal income tax returns. To gain valuable Canada Customs and Revenue Agency training, students are encouraged to volunteer to run this service, please contact the Students' Union's Vice President of Finance and Service. A canned/non-perishable food donation for the Community Food Room is requested for each tax return.

Just as the Students' Union works politically to solve the problem of student debt by lobbying to reduce and eliminate tuition fees, the Students' Union also provides a limited number of $500 emergency bursaries for members in financial need to help out in the short term. Bursaries are awarded on the following criteria: financial need and a minimum GPA of 2.0. Bursary applications can be picked up at the Students' Union main office (SCC-311) after mid October. COMMUNITY FOOD ROOM Location: SCC-212 Phone: 416-979-5255, ext. 1-2334 E-mail: foodroom@rsuonline.ca Web: www.foodroom.ca The Community Food Room, a Service Group of the Ryerson Students' Union, provides a food bank and healthy eating skills to students, staff and faculty. To ensure that the Community Food Room can service the growing needs, users are limited to one visit per week and can take 10 items per visit. Along with offering a food bank, the Community Food Room acts as a distribution centre for the Good Food Box. Fresh fruit and/or vegetable boxes can be purchased at a minimal cost on a bi-weekly basis. The Community Food room is also equipped with a referral list of community services and resources offered in the surrounding area. Student staff and volunteers organize events and campaigns to accomplish several goals that include: informing the community about poverty and food insecurity issues; soliciting funds and food to meet the needs of this service, providing students skills to eat healthy and to seek the elimination of poverty.

RyeACCESS works to address issues and barriers that impact students with special needs and abilities. Please note that RyeACCESS is not the ACCESS Centre, which is a university run service that serves the academic needs of students with disabilities via a tutoring program, equipment services, exam services and counselling. The aim of RyeACCESS is to strive for a barrier free campus by improving accessibility at Ryerson and creating conditions for full participation and inclusion of students with disabilities, in all aspects of campus life. RyeACCESS seeks to build a barrier free campus through advocacy, education, events, campaigns and outreach initiatives. RyeACCESS is always seeking volunteers; we encourage students with disabilities and allies to get involved to create change at Ryerson. Together we can build an inclusive community for all of us. Like other Community Service Groups of the Ryerson Students' Union, its mandate is to provide education, advocacy and service. RyePRIDE works to foster and provide positive and affirmative space for queer and trans people to make social contacts and find support, while ensuring that this safe space extends throughout Ryerson University and the greater community. As a service group of the RSU, RyePRIDE produces a regular e-newsletter, organizes film showings and speaker series, co-ordinates socials and provides an extensive resource library offering fiction and non-fiction books and magazines, videos and more. RyePRIDE also supplies condoms and safe sex information to people who drop by the office. Queer and trans positive volunteers are a welcome addition, without you our work is not possible. WOMEN'S CENTRE Location: SCC-210 Phone: 416-979-5255, ext. 1-2350 E-mail: womenscentre@rsuonline.ca If you are a Ryerson student interested in issues affecting women on campus like violence in relationships, racism, sexism, eating disorders, lesbianism and bisexuality, the Women's centre is the place to go to get involved and find support. The Centre is a women and women-identified space that is run by a group of volunteers with assistance from part-time student coordinators. The Women's Centre sponsors education campaigns, provides referrals, shows films, holds discussion groups and has an excellent resource library stocked with books, pamphlets, files, films, and reference material and newspaper clippings.
