Join the Glocal Links Program facilitated by International Student Support, Student Life!

Glocal Links is an intercultural dialogue program that promotes acceptance and appreciation of different cultures and the capacity to function interdependently with people from different cultural backgrounds. Through Glocal Links, International Student Support seeks and promotes opportunities for all participants to enrich their ideas on acceptance, empathy and self-respect. Our aim is to create culturally competent global citizens at Ryerson University.

This program does not only benefit international students, ALL Ryerson students are invited and encouraged to participate and celebrate diverse perspectives.

 

Through Glocal Links you will be able to:

 

  • Explore culture on a deeper level

  • Appreciate and enjoy learning about the experiences of diverse others

  • Become more aware and understand your own perspective better

  • Increase your intercultural awareness for a competitive advantage in the global workforce.

     

Glocal Links offers group activities, workshops and experiential learning opportunities. We have a dedicated team of student Cultural ambassadors who will facilitate the entire process with the program participants.

 

Program start date: September 21, 2017

Program end date: March 30, 2018

 

Time commitment: The participants will require to commit one hour per week (excluding final exams period and holiday break)

After successful completion of the program you will receive a Certificate of Completion from the Director of Student Life.

Program Components:

Program Orientation

Participants will meet for the first time and work together to build group guidelines for the active involvement throughout the year. Our student Cultural Ambassadors will guide students through team building activities.

Participants will be given the opportunity to identify and set goals for their learning in the Glocal Links program.

 

Community Excursions

All Glocal Links participants will be given the opportunity to explore different cultural hubs in the city of Toronto free of cost! Excursions will include guided discussion and activities where all who participate are invited to share their diverse perspectives and understanding.

 

Learning Activities

  • Workshops

    • Food and Culture workshop

    • The Blanket Exercise

    • Film Screenings - screening of critically acclaimed films and discussion

    • Group discussions on intercultural dialogue

 

Sociocultural Competency discussions

Participants are given an opportunity to map out various interactions and discuss similarities and differences among their cultures. These conversations are facilitated by student staff - Cultural Ambassadors.

Program Learning Opportunities

Overall, the goal of the programming that we facilitate is to allow for students to be actively involved in their learning. The Glocal Links Program invites expert facilitators to engage with students through experiential learning sessions which include guided discussions and activities. Students will be able to reflect and actively learn through their experiences in these sessions.  

 

Experiential Learning Opportunities facilitated through the Glocal Links Program:

 

  • The KAIROS Blanket Exercise teaching Indigenous history in Canada facilitated by Ryerson's Aboriginal Education Council.

  • Food and Culture Workshop with Ryerson faculty member

  • Excursions to Kensington Market, Aga Khan Museum, Graffiti Alley, Ryerson Image Centre

  • Film Screening and facilitated discussion with topic experts.
