Ryerson's Commitment


Ryerson’s Access Centre for Students with Disabilities upholds the values and legislation of:

  • Ryerson University’s Senate Policy 159: Academic Accommodation of Students with Disabilities;
  • The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA); and,
  • The Ontario Human Rights Code (OHRC).



Policy 159

This policy outlines the “guidelines for the academic accommodation of students with disabilities in order for them to access learning while maintaining the integrity of course content and objectives, and ensuring fairness for all students.” (Purpose, I)

AODA

The Act “(a) develop[s], implement[s] and enforce[es] accessibility standards in order to achieve accessibility for Ontarians with disabilities with respect to goods, services, facilities, accommodation, employment, buildings, structures and premises on or before January 1, 2025; and (b) provid[es] for the involvement of persons with disabilities, of the Government of Ontario and of representatives of industries and of various sectors of the economy in the development of the accessibility standards. 2005, c. 11, s. 1.” (Purpose, I)

OHRC

This legislation maintains, “Every person has a right to equal treatment with respect to services, goods and facilities, without discrimination because of race, ancestry, place of origin, colour, ethnic origin, citizenship, creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, age, marital status, family status or disability." (Part I, Freedom From Discrimination)
