Student Housing Services - Mid-Year Break

Mid-Year Break

During the last two weeks of December Ryerson closes for the mid-year break.

At this time all of the residences close as well.

When Ryerson and the residences are closed no students are allowed into the residences. You are required to vacate your residence at 9 pm on the night of your last exam in December.

Your belongings may remain in the room during the mid-year break as your door will remain locked.

2012-2013 Mid-Year Break Information

Vacating Your Room

Students are required to vacate their room by whichever date comes first: the day of their last exam by 9 pm, or the closing date of the residences, which is December 15, by noon.

We ask that students leave residence in a timely fashion after their exams for several reasons. By having only students who still need to write exams in residence, there is less noise and fewer distractions for studying. It is also more practical for everyone not to have every student move out of residence with their things on the same day (remember Move-In Day?).

That being said, we understand there are sometimes issues with move-out dates. These generally arise from pre-booked flights and tickets.

If you need to stay later than 9 pm on the day of your last exam, you must submit a written request form to the Student Housing Services office. Forms are due to the Student Housing Services office by November 23, 2012 as stated by your RA/CL. Extension of Stay forms can be picked up in PIT-100 or are available here (Extension of Stay Request Form).

If you have any further questions please visit the Student Housing Services office for more information.

When leaving your room:

Help the environment:

  • Turn off ALL lights.
  • In the ILLC - The individual heater in your room should remain on and set at the lowest setting.
  • In Pitman Hall and O'Keefe House - The individual heater in your room should be turned off (the heating in the building will remain on).

Help yourself:

  • UNPLUG all electrical appliances - including your alarm clock and computer. A $25 maintenance fee will be charged, should staff be required to enter your room to unplug any appliances.
  • Please take this opportunity to clean out your fridge - but remember to leave it plugged in so food left behind does not spoil.
  • Cleaning staff will also be cleaning out all common floor lounge refrigerators during the holiday break. Please remove all of your items from the fridges. All items left over in the common floor lounge fridges will be removed and disposed of.
  • Please ensure that you do not leave any dirty dishes in any common floor lounges, or kitchens. The cleaning staff will be conducting a thorough cleaning of the common floor kitchen areas, and any dirty dishes left in common floor lounges will be thrown out.
  • The window in your room should be closed to prevent freezing.
  • Dispose of all garbage to prevent odours.
  • If you are in an apartment: please ensure that your kitchen is left clean and tidy, so as not to attract bugs.

Mid-Year Break Closing

The residences officially close at 12 noon on Saturday, December 15, 2012 and re-open at 12 noon on Sunday, January 6, 2013. During this period you will not be able to access any residence building because there will be no Student Housing Services staff on the premises. Please make sure to take any items of value such as money, MP3 player, etc. home with you that you anticipate needing over the mid-year break.

Student Housing Services is not responsible for your personal belongings.

Access After December 15th

Limited access is available to the residences from December 17 to 20. If you need to gain access to a residence building during this period you need to request permission, 24-hours in advance, from the Student Housing Services office. Access is available only during these days: December 17- 20, 10 am - 4 pm.

Temporary Accommodation

If you are unable to return home after your exam, or do not have alternative accommodations during the mid-year break period, you can pick up a list of temporary accommodations at the Student Housing Services office.

We are happy to provide you with a list of options, but you are responsible for organizing and paying for alternate accommodation.

Room Inspections & Mid-Year Maintenance

Maintenance will be hard at work during the mid-year break to ensure your living space is functioning properly in the New Year.

Their work will require them to enter each room. The fire safety system will be tested, heating units will be inspected, and other preventative maintenance will be completed.  Please ensure you have all of your personal belongings up off the floor and away from the heating units to allow easy access to the areas requiring inspection and/or maintenance.

If you have any questions or concerns about this work, please speak to the Student Housing Services office staff. If there are items in your room that are broken, and you have not yet filled out a maintenance request, please do so as soon as possible through the work order system.

Student Housing Services staff will also conduct room inspections of the buildings to ensure that all residents have left the building and that there are no health and safety concerns within the residences.

Quiet Hours

24 hour quiet hours begin at 11:00 pm on November 30th.

During quiet hours, we ask that you respect your neighbours and ensure that you aren’t disrupting their study time. Stereos, TV's, etc. should be kept at a low volume (or use headphones) and room doors should be kept closed. Noise that can be heard outside of a room or lounge is not permitted. Treat others as you would like to be treated the night before a big exam!

Quiet hours are relaxed between the hours of 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. nightly to relax and be able to make moderate noise.

No Guests

Unfortunately, during the exam period, no overnight guests are permitted in residence. Again, this is to reduce the risk of noise and distractions.

Beginning Friday November 30th at 11:00 pm overnight guests cannot be signed into the residences. Regular guest sign-ins will resume on January 6th at noon.

If you need to have an overnight guest during the exam period please complete a guest exemption form available in the Student Housing Services office. Forms are due to the Student Housing Services office by November 23rd, 2012.

Academic Support & Study Space

Please keep in mind that Academic Links are available to help you leading up to exams.  Your Academic Link will continue to host office hours through finals should you need extra support.  If you do not know your Academic Link's office hours, please feel free to email academic.link@ryerson.ca and someone will be in touch with your AL's contact and office hours.

The lounge is open 24 hours as a quiet study space.  Pitman Hall room 110 is also available.  ALs will be hosting some additional hours in PIT-110 to ensure it is a quiet place to study.  Group studying can happen in the AL Lounge, with both friends from on and off campus.

Please see you Academic link for any issues you feel you are facing with your academics.  See them earlier rather than later - they are here to help!

Food Services

Pitman Hall cafeteria will close at 12 noon December 14th and reopen January 7th.   Maggie's Eatery will close at 4 pm on December 14th and reopen January 12th.

Students who return to residence on January 6th will need to be aware there will be no cafeteria services available.

Meal Plan

In the winter term your OneCard will be loaded with the second half of your meal plan. Any funds that you have remaining in this term will also remain.

If you used more of your meal plan than expected, you may want to consider having some money set aside to allow you to top up your meal plan if necessary.
