ISS - Housing

It is highly recommended that you secure housing prior to arriving in Toronto.

While private housing may be found in Toronto after arrival, housing suitable for students is limited, particularly during the back to school period in late August and early September. A standard private residential lease is one year. Inexpensive short term housing (5-6 months) is more difficult to arrange. Keep in mind that most landlords will require that you pay first and last month's rent up front.

There are three Ryerson residences:

  1. Pitman Hall
  2. O'Keefe House
  3. International Living and Learning Centre (ILLC)

Several international students recommend that although living on campus is not the least expensive option, there are many advantages for new international students including:

  • You can reserve your housing before arriving in Toronto.
  • The duration lasts for the school year only and does not cover the summer period. O'Keefe House stays open over the December holiday break while Pitman Hall and the ILLC close after exams until Registration Week in January.
  • Most meals and utility expenses are included and you do not need to purchase dishes, etc.
  • You save time and money by not having to commute to campus.
  • There are many services and activities to assist new students to make friends, become familiar with Ryerson and Toronto, and particularly the university academic environment.
  • Student-staff members are available on each floor 24 hours a day.

Ryerson has an on-campus residence for approximately 840 students. Although every effort is made to accommodate first year international students in residence, room cannot be guaranteed due to limited spaces. Apply early to avoid disappointment. If you indicated that you require housing on the Ontario University Application Centre (OUAC) form, a residence application form and information will be sent to you. If you need an application form, contact the Ryerson Office of Admissions, or Student Housing at (416)979-5284 or e-mail Residence Life.

Short Term Temporary Housing

If you arrive in Toronto and do not have a place to stay, consult Traveler's Aid at the Toronto Airport to find temporary housing. You may also speak with the Airport Reception Service, operated by CBIE, if your are arriving during their period of operation. You can also contact the guest houses or hostels listed below in advance to reserve a room. Once you have a temporary place to live, you will be able to look for appropriate permanent housing.
