International Student Services

UHIP provides coverage for basic health care services such as hospital, physician, laboratory, ambulance and some other services generally covered by Ontario resident health insurance. UHIP pays up to $1,000,000 (Canadian) a year for each covered person incurring eligible health services and medical treatments.

Eligible medical expenses include:

• hospital and physician services
• diagnostic laboratory and X-ray services
• ambulance (equivalent to the amount paid by OHIP)
• Emergency services outside Ontario or Canada
• nursing homes and at-home care
• Repatriation

Pregnancy Related Healthcare

UHIP provides coverage for care related to pregnancy (prenatal and postnatal), even if the pregnancy began before arrival in Canada. It is very important to arrange for delivery at a PPN hospital (a hospital that accepts UHIP) to guarantee full coverage under UHIP. Please refer to the section on "Hospitals that accept UHIP” for more information.

Additional Specialists Covered by UHIP

UHIP will provide coverage for treatment by an osteopath or podiatrist, to the same levels and under the same conditions as OHIP coverage. Please note that physiotherapist and chiropractor services are not covered by UHIP. Students might have additional coverage for some specialists through one of the Supplementary Plans.

Generally, medical services that are not covered by OHIP would not be covered by UHIP. Some of the services that are not covered include:

• Prescriptions drugs
• Routine eye exams for persons between the ages of 20-65
• Physiotherapy
• Eyeglasses, frames or contact lenses
• Dental care services
• Acupuncture
• Chiropractor services
• Medical examinations and tests required for immigration purposes or a third party cosmetic surgery
• Preparation of records, reports, certificates, or communications
• Services not covered under OHIP at the time the services are rendered
