Fresh Start

Welcome to the Fresh Start Program

What is Fresh Start?

Fresh Start is the name of the Student Success Program designed for students who have been 'Required to Withdraw' from their program of study.

At this time, Fresh Start is offered in the Fall, Winter and Spring term. Students may apply to participate in Fresh Start in thier home program, or transfer to another program that participates in Fresh Start Transfers.  See below for further details.

Students who were RTW after an academic term may chose, if eligible, to particiapte in Fresh Start. Each student must sit out for one semester.  In the semster following, students who are approved for the Fresh Start program will be able to take two courses for credit and up to 4 courses for credit in the 3rd Semester while they pursue reinstatement to their program or transfer to another.

During their second semester students take 2 full-credit courses and must also participate in a 7-week skills-building course, CIFS100.

The CIFS100 Fresh Start Strategies course involves two face-to-face sessions, weekly online discussion participation and a final ePortfolio assignment.

If you register for Fresh Start, you will participate in programming that provide an opportunty for you to explore the reasons you were unsuccessful last year, and whether or not your initial program selection was right for you; it will also give you the chance to enhance your academic skills.

If you meet all of the Fresh Start program requirements, you will be guaranteed reinstatement to your former program.

It is important to meet with your program advisor as soon as possible, as the deadline for the Fall 2013 is August. Check your standing letter for further information.

What if I want to transfer to another program?

If you are seeking admission to another program (i.e. you don't want to be reinstated back into your original program), you will still be required to take the follow steps.

Please note that transfer to another program is always subject to eligibility, competition and space availability.

How to “Request for Fresh Start Transfer”

1. Determine if you meet the eligibility for the program you would like to transfer into by visiting: Fresh Start Program Participation Criteria   Please refer to the bottom note on each program regarding RTW Transfers. You will need to provide this form to Admissions.

2. If you are eligible for the program, please complete the Fresh Start Transfer Form and submit it to POD 144 Undergraduate Admissions and Recruitment.   If you require support completing the forms, you may visit an Admissions Officer in POD 144 during  drop-in hours for assistance.

3. You will hear back from an Admissions Officer (AO) regarding the standing of your request.  Further instructions on how to proceed will be made available by the Admissions Officer.

Forms to apply to Fresh Start are also available on this site.

I participated in the Fresh Start program last year. Can I sign up again?

No, you may only participate in the Fresh Start program once.

What is special about Fresh Start? How is it different from just taking courses like I did last year?

Fresh Start is different because it provides you with a unique opportunity to reflect on what led to your difficulties last year, and to make more informed choices about your education and career while taking program-relevant courses for credit. You will have the chance to enhance your academic skills and to get academic advice from experts. We believe that this is a formula for success.

How can I guarantee myself reinstatement to my home program?

You will be guaranteed reinstatement to your home program if you:

  1. Successfully complete the Fresh Start requirements established by your program
  2. Pass the Fresh Start Strategies course
