Fresh Start

Welcome to the Fresh Start Program

Please check this page regularly for updates.

What is Fresh Start? Fresh Start is the name of the Student Success Program designed for students who have been 'Required to Withdraw' from their program of study. Students who are approved for the Fresh Start program will be able to take two courses for credit in the 2nd Semester and up to 4 courses for credit in the 3rd Semester while they pursue reinstatement to their program or transfer to another. During the time they take 2 full-credit courses, Fresh Start students must also participate in a 7-week skills-building course, CIFS100.

The CIFS100 Fresh Start Strategies course involves two face-to-face sessions, weekly online discussion participation and a final ePortfolio assignment. The Spring/Summer CIFS100 course dates are May 7 to June 11, 2012.

If you register for Fresh Start, you will participate in programming that will help you figure out the reasons you were unsuccessful last year, and whether or not your initial program selection was right for you; it will also give you the chance to enhance your academic skills. If you meet all of the Fresh Start program requirements, you will be guaranteed reinstatement to your former program.

How do I know if I am eligible for Fresh Start?

If you were 'Required to Withdraw' at the end of the Winter 2012 semester, contact your program advisor to confirm your eligibility. When you connect, you can discuss how Fresh Start options apply to students in your particular academic program. Your program advisor will facilitate your registration.

It is important to meet with your program advisor as soon as possible, as the deadline for registration is August 3, 2012. Find your program advisor now.

What if I want to transfer to another program?

If you are seeking admission to another program (i.e. you don't want to be reinstated back into your original program), you must:

  1. Meet with an Admissions Officer to determine whether you meet the admission requirements
  2. You can see the Admissions Officer in POD 144 on a drop-in basis. You will still be required to fill out a 'Request for Fresh Start Transfer' Form. Please note that transfer to another program is always subject to eligibility, competition and space availability
If I am seeking transfer to another program, who do I send my 'Request for Fresh Start Transfer' Form to?

If you are seeking transfer to another program, you must submit your Transfer form to the program you wish to transfer into. View the list of program advisors.

I participated in the Fresh Start program last year. Can I sign up again?

No, you may only participate in the Fresh Start program once.

What is special about Fresh Start? How is it different from just taking courses like I did last year?

Fresh Start is different because it provides you with a unique opportunity to reflect on what led to your difficulties last year, and to make more informed choices about your education and career while taking program-relevant courses for credit. You will have the chance to enhance your academic skills and to get academic advice from experts. We believe that this is a formula for success.

How can I guarantee myself reinstatement to my home program?

You will be guaranteed reinstatement to your home program if you:

  1. Successfully complete the Fresh Start requirements established by your program
  2. Pass the Fresh Start Strategies course
