Welcome to the Fresh Start Program

What is Fresh Start?

Fresh Start is the name of the Student Success Program designed for students who have been 'Required to Withdraw' from their program of study.

At this time, Fresh Start is offered in the Fall, Winter and Spring term. Students may apply to participate in Fresh Start:

(1) in thier home program, or

(2) transfer to another program that participates in Fresh Start Transfers.

Students who were RTW after an academic term may chose, if eligible, to particiapte in Fresh Start. Each student must sit out for one semester following their RTW standing.  In the semster following, students who are approved for the Fresh Start program will be able to take two courses for credit and up to 4 courses for credit in the 3rd Semester while they pursue reinstatement to their program or transfer to another.

During their second semester students take 2 full-credit courses and must also participate in a 7-week skills-building course, CIFS100.

Note: Part time students take 1 course in the first semester, and 2 in the second.

What is the CIFS 100 Course that I am required to take?

The CIFS100 Fresh Start Strategies course involves two face-to-face sessions, weekly online discussion participation and a final ePortfolio assignment.  Students are automatically enrolled in the CIFS 100 course.

If you register for Fresh Start, you will participate in programming that provide an opportunty for you to explore the reasons you were unsuccessful last year, and whether or not your initial program selection was right for you; it will also give you the chance to enhance your academic skills.

If you meet all of the Fresh Start program requirements, you will be guaranteed reinstatement to your former program.

It is important to meet with your program advisor as soon as possible, as the deadline for the Fall 2013 is August 2nd. Check your standing letter for further information.

What if I want to transfer to another program?

If you are seeking admission to another program (i.e. you don't want to be reinstated back into your original program), you will still be required to take the follow steps.

Please note that transfer to another program is always subject to eligibility, competition and space availability.

How to “Request for Fresh Start Transfer”

Forms to apply to Fresh Start are also available on this site.

I participated in the Fresh Start program last year. Can I sign up again?

No, you may only participate in the Fresh Start program once.

What is special about Fresh Start? How is it different from just taking courses like I did last year?

Fresh Start is different because it provides you with a unique opportunity to reflect on what led to your difficulties last year, and to make more informed choices about your education and career while taking program-relevant courses for credit. You will have the chance to enhance your academic skills and to get academic advice from experts. We believe that this is a formula for success.

How can I guarantee myself reinstatement to my home program?

You will be guaranteed reinstatement to your home program if you:

  1. Successfully complete the Fresh Start requirements established by your program
  2. Pass the Fresh Start Strategies course
