We require that you book an appointment to see the doctor. You can either call the Medical Centre at (416)979-5070 or drop into the clinic during business hours to set up a time. There are a small number of same day appointments available, please call early in the day to ask about the likelihood of a same day appointment.
When booking an appointment, the receptionist will usually ask you what the nature of the visit is, that is what you need to see the doctor about. This is so that we may be able to schedule the appropriate amount of time for you and the doctor. If you need a medical note please mention this to the receptionist when booking your appointment so that adequate time can be allotted.
Please Note: Due to the high volume of requests we receive daily, we are not always able to accomodate all of our patients on a same day basis. This is especially important for prescription renewals. We require an in-office visit, for renewals, so please call well in advance of running out of your medication.
Can I walk in to see the doctor if I have a quick question or issue to discuss?
In order to alleviate long waiting periods and increase client satisfaction, walk ins will be permitted only when time permits. Unfortunately, due to the high volume of requests for appointments at the Medical Centre we are unable to accommodate all of our patients, preference will be given to those with booked appointments.
To avoid long waiting periods and in order to serve our patients with the utmost care and efficiency we only accept walk in patients when an urgent request is made. An urgent appointment is that which requires fairly immediate medical attention. An open wound requiring stitches, asthma attacks or difficulty breathing are examples of urgent type appointments.
Often a minor problem such as a cold, sore throat or minor injury such as a sprained ankle may occur overnight. There are a limited number of same day appointments available for these purposes. If you wish to schedule an appointment for an acute problem such as these it is best to call early in the day, as these appointments go quickly.
1. Quick or Short Appointment (10 minutes)
A Short appointment is appropriate for birth control refills, allergy injections, uncomplicated colds or bladder infections. There will be time for one issue only. If you have other issues, you will need to book another appointment for it. You can discuss with the doctor which issue is more urgent.
2. Intermediate Appointment
More Complicated Medical Issues (20 minutes) A twenty minute appointment is suggested for any concerns you have with birth control, sexually transmitted diseases, headaches, back pain, and other more complicated problems If you have several issues to discuss you may need to schedule more than one appointment in order to allow for time to address each issue. It is best to discuss this with the doctor to determine what type of appointments you will need.
3. Annual Health Examinations
Appointments for routine Pap smears and annual physicals are usually booked at least two weeks in advance. Please note that due to OHIP regulations, one exam (Pap smears or Annual Health Exam) only is permitted per year. Please ensure that it will be one full year or more before booking your next physical / Pap examination.
Annual physical examinations require two separate appointments. The first appointment is comprised of a 20- minute history recall with the doctor called a Pre-Physical assessment. The second consists of a 30- minute full physical examination.
4. Pre-Physical Appointment
A Health Questionnaire Form is required to be completed prior to the pre-physical appointment. If you wish to, download the form here, or alternatively pick one up at the Medical Centre prior to your appointment.
On the day of your first appointment at the Ryerson Medical Centre it is essential that you arrive early, about ten or more minutes, to register with your Health Card. For each visit thereafter, it is usually best to arrive a few minutes early so that you may update your information with the receptionist. If you wish to, you may download The Registration Form (PDF Format), complete it and bring it along with you to your first appointment.
Please Note: Each appointment is scheduled for the time slot that you have requested. If you arrive more than five minutes late for your appointment you may need to reschedule for another date. Patients who do not give adequate (24 hrs) cancellation notice or who fail to arrive at their scheduled appointment time may be billed for the appointment.
It is the policy of the Ryerson Medical Centre to provide the best care possible for all of our patients. Please be considerate to other patients by providing 24 hours cancellation notice when you are unable to make your appointment. This will provide an opportunity for others to see one of the physicians should the need arise.
The Medical Centre is equipped with a voice mail system which accepts messages 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week. If you are unable to cancel your appointment during regular business hours, please leave a voice mail message to ensure you will not be charged for your appointment.
