- Make a difference in someone’s life
- Meet new people
- Fine tune your public speaking skills
- Increase your networking contacts
3 Steps to Becoming a First Generation Volunteer:
Step 1: Check out our Volunteer Opportunities
Community Mentors take part in the Community Mentoring Program. This program strives to help young people become mentors and leaders in their own community. In this two-fold program, mentors with the FG Project learn to employ a “train-the-trainer” model. FG mentors guide youth on the most effective ways to mentor. Those youth will then be given the opportunity to put their learning into practice as a mentor in their own community.
Panelists for the FG Project share their personal experiences with student audiences. Volunteers speak candidly about the barriers, successes and failures they have experienced in the education system.
Event Floaters help make FG Events a success! Event Floaters are required to multi-task and take directions effectively during FG workshops, Lunch ‘n Learns, Community Galas and other facilitated events on and off campus. Primary duties include event set-up, tear-down, and guest services.
Journalists cover FG events for use on the FG website and newsletters. Students with journalism experience preferred.
Step 2: Fill out a Volunteer Application Form
Step 3: Get Trained!
The First Generation Project believes that in order to be a successful volunteer, it is important that you are properly trained. Here are some of the topics that will be covered in your Volunteer Training:
- Effective icebreakers

Once you have submitted your Volunteer Application Form, one of our friendly staff will contact you within (2) weeks to discuss the following:
- Let you know that we received your Volunteer Application
- Confirm your availability for one of our Volunteer Orientation dates
- Arrange to complete a police check (paid for by the First Generation Project) to ensure that you are in clear standing to volunteer with children/youth under the age of 18
And then you’ll be set to start volunteering with the First Generation Project!
