Faculty Tenure Committees' Delays (April 16, 2013)

Dear colleagues,

I am writing to you collectively as current candidates for tenure to provide you with information regarding the tenure review process currently underway.

As you are aware the tenure review process was modified in the last round of collective bargaining and part of the change adopted was the addition of a Faculty level review by a Faculty Tenure Committee.  This second level review as well as a more explicit opportunity for tenure candidates to provide feedback to both the Department Evaluation Committee and FTC has resulted in a longer timeline for evaluation and decision making compared to the prior process.

Given that this is the first year for this new evaluation process there have been some delays at both the Departmental and Faculty levels, primarily to ensure procedural questions are resolved or because extensions have been sought.  As a result, if there is a concern that you have not heard from your Faculty Tenure Committee or a decision has not been rendered by my office please do not take that as an indication that a negative assessment has been made about your candidacy for tenure.

As well, please be assured that despite the timelines in the collective agreement having been pushed out, you will still be given the opportunity to respond to the FTC’s recommendation letter when it is received by you.

The administration and your peers want to ensure that the tenure review process is procedurally and substantively correct as tenure is fundamentally important to the University's mission and your career as an academic.

Sincerely,
Avner Levin
