Dr. Steven Murphy
Dean, Ted Rogers School of Management
Professor, Entrepreneurship and Strategy

The Dean’s Council was created by Dr. Steven Murphy, dean of the Ted Rogers School of Management, to provide expert and industry-specific guidance on topics such as curriculum, market positioning, international expansion, and technology and trend evaluation, in accordance with Ryerson University’s new academic plan, as well as the TRSM-specific academic plan. Its members, who will serve two-year terms, will also be ambassadors for the school within their industries or sectors.

The council begins its mandate in September 2014. Its membership comprises 23 seasoned professionals from the corporate and not-for-profit worlds. They were chosen from local, national and international organizations based on their genuine passion for shaping post-secondary educational and career opportunities for a diverse student body, as well as a willingness to promote the school’s plans for growth.

Dean’s Council members will support Dean Murphy in his efforts to fulfil the four major goals of TRSM’s academic plan:

  1. Redefining Experiential Learning for the 21st Century
  2. Enhancing Graduate Programs and Research
  3. Cultivating our City Building Reputation
  4. Improving our Internal Governance, Communications and Structures to Enable Lasting Innovation

The key responsibilities include:

  • Strategic advice: Communicating ideas and concerns about academic programs
  • Student engagement: A willingness to interact with students on varied topics and issues
  • Building relationships: Enhancing the school’s brand and profile by fostering relationships on its behalf within the business community
  • Acting as ambassadors: Advise and assist the school in promoting itself locally, nationally and internationally as it seeks to attract a diversity of students
  • Fundraising: Support and guide the school’s fundraising efforts by identifying potential funding sources and participating in fundraising events.

Ryerson's new academic plan

In fulfilling these responsibilities, the members of the Dean’s Council will work within the parameters of Ryerson’s new academic plan. The plan identifies four principal priorities that will inform university strategy and planning during the next five years:

  • Creating student engagement and success through exceptional experiences
  • Increasing SRC excellence, intensity and impact
  • Fostering an innovation ecosystem
  • Expanding community engagement and city-building
