Biography:

Steven A. Gedeon, PhD (MIT), MBA, PEng is a professor in Entrepreneurship & Strategy at the Ted Rogers School of Management. He has founded or led over a dozen private, public, venture capital and non-profit organizations; published over 100 articles, reports and patents; and delivered over 40 public speaking engagements and on-line videos on personal leadership, motivation, entrepreneurship and teaching.

Dr. Gedeon has won over 20 awards including the inaugural Ryerson Experiential Teaching Award, the Ryerson President’s Award of Teaching Excellence and the USASBE National Award for Entrepreneurial Experiential Education Best Practices.

Professor Gedeon teaches the year-long experiential capstone courses in entrepreneurship where 100 students created over $20M in new revenue for 19 site companies and started over a dozen new companies over three years.

As Faculty Advisor to Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE), Steve provides experiential teaching to over 100 students from all five Ryerson faculties and coached the team to winning 19 Championships including the National Entrepreneurship Championship, the National Financial Literacy Championship and the overall Most Enterprising Campus National Championship. Over the last 3 years, SIFE has impacted over 1,000 high school and at-risk youth, 3,000 Ryerson students and helped 35 startup companies raise over $1M in financing.

As Director of the Ryerson Entrepreneur Institute (REI) – Canada’s only student run entrepreneurship centre – Steve finances, supervises and mentors approximately 30 work-study students during the year and 25 full-time summer experiential learning students. In 2010 REI won the Canadian Urban Institute’s Prosperity Leadership Award for the greatest impact on any city’s prosperity.

Steve was CEO of Ashurst Technology, a TSE and NASDAQ listed company with 26 subsidiaries in 15 countries and founded Jaycor’s $100M corporate VC program. More recently, Steve was Founding CEO of 3DNA Corp., a new media technology company that raised 6 rounds of financing and created the number one download in its product category with over 20 awards and 80 magazine articles, as well as many fan sites and over a million users.

Dr. Gedeon is currently Director of the Ryerson Entrepreneur Institute, Director of the Ryerson Angel Network, Managing Director of the Dobson Micro-Financing Seed Venture Fund, President and Chairman of CEO Fusion, Chairman of the Educational Committee of the National Angel Organization, Faculty Advisor to Students in Free Enterprise Ryerson, Faculty Advisor to the Digital Media Zone, Advisor to the Ontario Partnership for Innovation and Commercialization and Assistant Professor in the Entrepreneurship & Strategy Department at the Ted Rogers School of Management at Ryerson University.

Research Interest:

Research interests leverage relationships and grants from the Ontario Partnership for Innovation and Commercialization, Dobson Foundation, CEO Fusion, National Angel Organization, Students in Free Enterprise, and the Entrepreneur’s Benchmarking and Thought Leadership Forum and include analyzing and modeling success factors related to performance of high-growth, technology-based companies, including:


• Sources of competitive advantage including technology, convergence, innovation, positioning, human capital and relationship management capital

• Financing entrepreneurial ventures including seed capital, angel investing, venture capital, private equity and merchant banking

• Improving personal and corporate performance including goal-setting, efficacy, motivation, intent, behavior, and networking

• Monitoring and modeling performance indicators including key business drivers, board governance and corporate valuation

Dr. Gedeon has hired over 20 undergraduate research assistants and work-study students during 2006 and 2007.
