Biography:

Dr. Tiessen teaches and does research related to international management.  His work on a range of topics–including entrepreneurship, joint ventures, SME exporting, and website localization is linked by a focus on Japan.  This focus is due to his years spent there, and later, his experience working for a Japanese organization in Canada.

Tiessen is doing comparative work on Japanese healthcare.  Why?  OECD Health Data (2009) show that Japan spends just over 8% of its GDP on healthcare, compared to about 10% in Canada and 16% in the US.  Yet in 2007 about 21% of Japanese were aged 65 or over, while only about 13% of Canadians and Americans are in this age bracket.  Japan’s system relies on public finance for more than 80% of its outlays, much more than Canada (70%) or the US (45%).  His research program, conducted with Charles McMillan (York University) and Ryerson colleague Karen Spalding, is looking at hospital level practices in order to better understand these differences.

Before joining the Ted Rogers School of Management in 2008, Tiessen taught at McMaster University’s DeGroote School of Business for more than 10 years.
