2013 HTM Awards Program

These awards are available to all full-time students in the Ted Rogers School of Hospitality and Tourism Management at Ryerson University. Each award listed below has criteria which can be reviewed by clicking on the award name. Please note that not all awards are offered every year. Some awards may require a budget form where a link is attached as part of the criteria. The deadline for submission of the applications, along with a copy of your resume, is Friday, September 6, 2013. 

The year on which the awards are based is the 2012-2013 academic year. Please apply to the awards that you qualify for that year, not the ones that are for the year you will be in this Fall. You must have taken the course(s) listed or the highest level course during the past year when a group of courses are listed.

+ F. Gerry Brander Memorial Award - $1,000
Achievement of a high standing in Tourism Concepts (HTT202), Travel Product Distribution (HTT303) and Tourism Policy Issues (HTT509)

+ Cara Operations Award - $1,000
Open to students entering in their 3rd or 4th year
Demonstrate an interest in the restaurant food and beverage industry as a career through recent courses taken and work or volunteer experience within the Restaurant Industry
A completed application must include a letter (maximum 500 words) outlining your demonstrated interest and experience in the restaurant food and beverage industry and why it is your career choice

+ Colliers International Hotels Award - $1,500
Open to students who have completed third year and entering their final year of studies
Achievement of high academic standing in Managerial Accounting (HTA402) and Financial Management (HTA602) for Hospitality and Tourism Management
Work experience in the lodging sector of the hospitality industry
Experience and/or interest in hotel real estate and/or financing plus interest in assisting in planning for the Annual Canadian Hotel Investment Conference during fourth year

+ George B. Davidson Scholarship Award - $500
Achievement of the high standing in Lodging Industry and Organization (HTL101) and Property Management Systems (HTL201)
Significant contribution to the Hospitality and Tourism Management program through extra-curricular and/or co-curricular activities

+ Delta Hotels Hospitality and Tourism Scholarship - $2,000
Awarded to a student who has completed first year on going into second year
Based on academic merit, demonstrated leadership and involvement in community and campus organizations

+ Director’s Award of Excellence - $1,000 & Plaque
Awarded to the graduating student with the highest cumulative GPA who has exhibited a commitment to excellence in academic course work

+ Foodservice Purchasing Association of Canada – Valarie Gray Scholarships - $1,000
Achievement of the high standing in Food and Beverage Cost Control Systems (HTF201)
Demonstrated interest in the purchasing aspect of the foodservice industry
Demonstrate financial need on the attached Budget Form

+ Granite Club Award (in memory of Sarah Threapleton) - $1,500
Awarded to a student who has completed third year of the program with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.33
Experience in a Canadian Club Management environment and an interest in pursuing club management as a career

+ Greater Toronto Hotel Association Award - $1,800
2 awards at $1,800 each
Completed first year and entering second year with a Clear Academic standing
high academic standing in the following first year HTM courses: HTF100 (Introduction to Foodservice), HTL101 (Lodging Organization and Operations) and HTT202 (Tourism Concepts)
Work experience in hotels/resorts
Must be a Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident or Protected Person and live in Ontario
Demonstrate financial need on the attached OTSS Budget Form

High academic standing in Meeting and Convention Management (HTL503), Lodging Facilities Management (HTL507) and any one of Advanced Hospitality Management (HTH706), Hospitality Purchasing and Distribution Systems (HTL605) or The Value of Branding in Lodging (HTL701)
Experience in hotel/resort operations
Career objective to continue in the hotel/resort sector upon graduation

Awarded to a student who has successfully completed a diploma at a community college with high academic standing
Student has to have completed their first year and entering into their second year of studies at the Ted Rogers School of Hospitality and Tourism Management
Involvement in extra-curricular activities at the school

High academic standing in Service and Professionalism (HTH102)
Selection will be based on a combination of academic performance, hospitality work experience, extracurricular involvement (activities and honours) and personal attributes

Achievement of the high grade in Dimensions of the Food Service Industry (HTF100), Food and Beverage Cost Control Systems (HTF201), Quantity Food Production (HTF505) and Management of Food and Beverage Operations (HTF506)
Evidence of supervisory foodservice experience which meets Bitove’s five star objectives in cleanliness, service, presentation. Friendliness and quality

Awarded to a third year students going into 4th year
Minimum of B grade in both HTH503 Human Resources Administration and HTH601 Organizational Behaviour I

Open to students who have completed third year and entering their final year of studies
Must demonstrate excellence in both HTH102 (Service and Professionalism) and HTH501 (Advanced Service Management) with a minimum grade of B+ in each course
Include a one-page cover letter describing why you are an ideal candidate who has demonstrated academic excellence and commitment in the service area

Awarded to a second year student going into third year who has displayed a humanitarium approach toward his/her fellow students

+ Ryerson Hospitality Alumni Association (RHAA) Green Award - $1,000
Awarded to a second year student with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
Submit a short essay on the topic “What level of responsibility does the Hospitality industry have to operate in a sustainable manner? What are the benefits (financial and otherwise)? What contribution should students make to this effort?”

+ Ryerson Hospitality Alumni Association (RHAA) Spirit of Community Award - $1,000
The RHAA strives to help in the creation of networks that promote and support professional and social connections
Awarded to a current student in any year of the program who has demonstrated an awareness of this value and has contributed in a significant way to the creation of professional connections for the school and its students
The winner will have done this either by actively participating with the RHAA and its activities and/or by being an active volunteer in the University and HTM communities

2 awards at $1,500 annual awards
Awarded to a third or fourth year student
Demonstrate academic excellence by achievement of a minimum grade of 3.00 in HTT202 and HTT303 and either HTT509 or HTT510
Interest in pursuing a career in Hospitality and Tourism in the Greater Toronto Area that encourages tourists to come to the region, or serves tourists while in the region, either through course work taken and/or work experience
Demonstrate financial need with the attached OTSS Budget Form

Awarded to a third year student who exhibits a lively intellect, creativity and entrepreneurial ability, intent on pursuing a career in food and beverage, catering and/or event management
Must have completed all required food courses and at least one elective course in food and beverage or event management
students must write a one-page paper providing justification why they should be the award recipient
Must include a letter of recommendation from a HTM faculty member
