Ted Rogers Leadership Centre
About Us
Mission
The Ted Rogers Leadership Centre (TRLC) helps develop the corecompetencies that leaders need to excel in the organizations of today and tomorrow. The Centre’s programs combine academic and practical approaches to leadership, giving students opportunities to learn how they can become tomorrow's leaders.
As well, the Centre provides alumni and leaders from different sectors with a
forum to better understand the challenges and opportunities they face.
The Centre's work will focus on three key areas:
- Teaching
- Leadership Events and Communication
- Scholarship and Research
The Centre currently has three programs. The Forward 50 Leadership Summit for upper year undergraduate students, The Dare to Lead Summit for MBA students, and the Learn from Leaders Program that is available to all students.
Characteristics Found In All Good Leaders
There is much literature on what makes a good leader. The Ted Rogers Leadership Centre, having reviewed the literature and research believes there are, at a minimum, 9 characteristics that are found in all good leaders. These are:
- Self-Awareness: understanding your values, attitudes, strengths and weaknesses and how you affect others and how others perceive you.
- Self-regulation: conscious use of self so as to control emotions and biases so as to positively affect others
- Motivation: being driven to achieve and inspiring others to achieve
- Empathy: understanding and being sensitive to other people’s needs, values, aspirations and opinions
- Interpersonal competence: engaging, empowering, influencing others to achieve
- Transparency and integrity: openness about your goals, agenda and expectations and honest in all of your business dealings
- Authentic: be yourself.. showing yourself as a leader means exposing both strengths and weaknesses as well as your biases and values
- Passion: you are passionate about your direction, vision, idea, opportunity and you communicate that passion to others.
- Risk Taking: you take calculated and managed risks to meet goals and set new directions.
