Undergraduate Admission
Applying to Ryerson
Resources for Non Approved Students
Common Reasons for Non Approval or Cancellation
Competition
- Unfortunately, we do not have space to admit all qualified and interested applicants. All Ryerson programs are “limited enrolment” programs, which means we can only admit specific numbers of students.
- Meeting the minimum academic requirements does not guarantee admission. Admission is based on competitive grades in program specific subject requirements, competitive overall admission averages and, where applicable, non-academic requirements (e.g. portfolio, audition, essay).
- Review Basis of Admission for details.
Academic Requirements Not Met
- The specific Grade 12 U or M courses (or equivalents) and minimum grades required for admission consideration vary by program. All Ryerson programs stipulate specific subject prerequisites. Grades required for admission are determined on the basis of competition.
- Visit Academic Programs and select your program of interest to view the program specific requirements.
- When you apply, you must have, or be in the process of meeting, the admission requirements for the program of your choice.
- At the time your application is reviewed, if you are not enrolled or do not meet the minimum required grades in the program specific subject prerequisites, Ryerson is unable to give further consideration to your application.
Admission Average Not Met
- A minimum overall average (based on your best six Grade 12 U or M courses or equivalent) of 70% or equivalent establishes eligibility for admission consideration. Due to competition, many Ryerson programs require higher averages. If you do not have an overall average of 70% (or higher subject to competition) Ryerson is unable to give further consideration to your application.
- Review Basis of Admission for details.
- Applicants presenting studies from other curriculums may be required to present different grades than stated here and should refer to their official admission decision letter for further details.
English Language Requirements Not Met
- Applicants from a country where English is not the first language, or where English is an official language but not the first language, including applicants who have resided in Canada for four calendar years or less (i.e. your date of entry to Canada was on or after January 1, 2007 for Fall 2011), are required to present proof of English Language Proficiency at a satisfactory level. Ryerson does not accept English 12U (or equivalent) in lieu of a test of English language proficiency.
- If you are required to submit proof of English Language Proficiency (according to the above) and do not meet the submission deadline and/or minimum scores, Ryerson is unable to give further consideration to your application.
- Visit English Language Requirements for details about policies and procedures.
Transcripts, Supporting Documents, Non-Academic Material Not Submitted
- Ryerson does not send reminders requesting required documents. If you do not submit all the documentation required to complete your application, Ryerson is unable to give further consideration to your application.
- Visit After I Have Applied to review the requirements for a complete application.
Deadlines Not Met
- You are encouraged to submit and complete your application as early as possible. Applications, amendments, English proficiency test scores, supporting documents or non-academic material received after published deadline or equal consideration dates are reviewed subject to space availability and full consideration is not guaranteed.
- Visit Application Dates for details.
Suggestions for Non Approved Students
The number of applications, spaces available and grades of applicants varies from year to year at Ryerson and at all universities. We value your interest in Ryerson University and look forward to assisting you with your decisions about your future postsecondary options. Please take some time to consider the following suggestions.
Amend Your Application
Though you have not been offered admission to your program of choice at Ryerson, you may still be qualified for admission consideration to another program at Ryerson (or at another Ontario university) for this fall.
- Admission requirements vary by program. Some Ryerson programs may still be accepting applications. If you are interested in another program at Ryerson and meet the admission requirements, consider amending your application. Visit Programs Accepting Applications.
- Visit eInfo to research programs of study at other Ontario Universities.
- Use OUAC’s Admission Information Service. Qualified Ontario secondary school students applying for admission to an Ontario university who do not receive an offer of admission can inquire about possible openings at other Ontario universities through the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre (OUAC). To be considered for admission, students must have completed the OSSD or equivalent including six Grade 12 U or M courses by September with a minimum average of 60%, although higher averages are normally required. The Admission Information Service is generally available from June to August.
Upgrade
In order to become more competitive academically for a future entry point, you may want to consider upgrading one or more courses to boost a grade in one of your program specific subject requirements or your overall admission average.
- Summer School - Applicants who will not meet the deadline to complete the courses/ grades required to meet their conditions as stated in their official Offer of Admission may, for a limited number of Ryerson programs, submit a request for summer school consideration using Ryerson's online Extension Request Form. Not all programs will consider extension requests due to competition and space availability. Visit Requests For Summer School and Other Extensions for details.
- Night School or Adult Learning Centre – Consider a course offered by your local School or School Board
- Independent Learning Centre (ILC) – Complete an ILC course via correspondence
- Ryerson's G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education - Take an Academic Bridging Course. Please note this method of upgrading applies only where specific program subject requirements have not been met, and cannot be used by applicants who need to upgrade their overall average from secondary school.
