English Language Requirements

Applicants from a country where English is not the first language, or where English is an official language but not the first language, including applicants who have resided in Canada for four calendar years or less (i.e. your date of entry to Canada was on or after January 1, 2008 for Fall 2012), are required to present proof of English Language Proficiency at a satisfactory level.

Generally speaking, applicants who meet these requirements are invited to register for and write the Ryerson Test of English Proficiency (RTEP) on the Ryerson campus or submit alternate English language proficiency test results. Ryerson offers online and in-class preparatory English language courses through the G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education to help applicants prepare for English language proficiency tests.

Requirements for admission must be completed or in progress at the time of application. The assessment of an application is based on the information available at the time of application review. Ryerson will not accept English 12U or equivalent in lieu of a test of English language proficiency. Applicants with citizenship from some countries are not required to provide proof of English language proficiency; view a list of countries from which applicants are exempt from providing proof of English language proficiency.

Directions for registering for the Ryerson Test of English Proficiency (RTEP)

Invited applicants who are required to provide proof of English language proficiency should register for and write the RTEP as soon as possible. There are a number of test dates scheduled, including dates that precede application deadlines, to assist applicants in providing acceptable test results, which are part of a complete application, in a timely manner. Writing a test later may delay an admission decision, as decisions are made subject to admission requirements, competition, and space availability. An applicant’s RTEP result takes precedence over an applicant’s alternate English language proficiency test results.

Directions for submitting an alternate test of English proficiency (TOEFL, IELTS, MELAB, CAEL)

Invited applicants may submit alternate English language proficiency test results, which include Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) (Ryerson institution code 0886), International English Language Testing Service (IELTS), Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB), or Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL) results. Applicants should write tests as early as possible. Applicants must arrange for official results to be forwarded by the applicable agency / testing centre as soon as possible directly to Undergraduate Admissions and Recruitment at Ryerson within application deadlines. Ryerson will not accept test results submitted by the applicant or any other means.

The name, date of birth and other personal information on an Official Proficiency Test Score must match the information provided on the application for admission form. If there is a discrepancy, the results may not be matched to the application.

Preparatory English Language Courses Offered Online and In-Class at Ryerson University
Ryerson offers online and in-class preparatory English language courses through the G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education. These courses will be of special interest to those planning to write the Ryerson Test of English Proficiency or an alternate English language proficiency test.

In addition, applicants whose English language test results do not meet the requirements of their program choice(s) may take one of these course, as applicable, and afterwards be given the opportunity to write (or re-write) the Ryerson Test of English Proficiency (RTEP). Consideration or reconsideration for your program choice(s) will be subject to admission requirements, competition, and space availability. For example, an applicant writes the RTEP but their test results are too low for their program choice(s). They successfully complete COEN210, 220 or COEN410, 420, as applicable. They are given the opportunity to write the RTEP again. They are then reconsidered for their program choice(s) subject to admissions requirements, competition, and space availability.
