Who is an International Student?

Q.

Who is an international student?

A.

An international student is any student who is not a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, and must therefore obtain a study permit (student visa) in order to attend Ryerson. These students are charged international tuition fees ( $20,270 - $23,637).

Canadian citizens living abroad, Canadian Permanent Residents (Landed Immigrants), and approved refugee claimants are not considered international students. These students are assessed domestic tuition fees $6,576 - $9,718).

How many international students attend Ryerson?

A.

There are over 140 different countries represented at Ryerson, and our campus is arguably the most ethnically diverse in Canada. Currently, there approximately 1,000 students studying at Ryerson on study permits or student visas. We have a much larger population of students who have come to Ryerson and Toronto from around the globe to study- but we miss them in our head count because they are Canadian citizens or have permanent resident status.

The Admission Process

Q.

When do students apply to Ryerson?

A.

Students may apply to Ryerson as early as October and are advised to apply as soon as possible in order to expedite the admission process. All completed applications and amendments received by the following dates will receive equal consideration for admission:

Grades-Plus Programs: February 1

Grades-Plus programs select students on the basis of grades plus non-academic criteria (e.g. auditions, portfolios, essays).

Grades-Only Programs: March 1

Grades-Only programs select students on the basis of academic achievement.

Q.

How do students apply to Ryerson?

A.

All students apply for full-time admission to an undergraduate degree program at Ryerson University through the Ontario Universities' Application Centre (OUAC) opens new window. Visit Application Forms for details on which application to use.

Once Ryerson receives their application from the OUAC, students will receive an email from Ryerson with their Choose>Ryerson portal login information. The Choose>Ryerson portal at choose.ryerson.ca is Ryerson’s primary way of communicating with applicants, so students should be sure to check their portal often!

What happens next?

A.

Students are required to submit all required documentation to Ryerson in a timely manner (including their full name, OUAC student I.D. and/or Ryerson student number, and the program to which they've applied):

Applicants are encouraged to log in to their choose.ryerson.ca applicant portals on a regular basis to monitor their admission status, read time- sensitive communications from the admission office, and view documents that have been received in support of their application.

Under what circumstances would Ryerson require a student to write a test of proficiency in the English language?

A.

Ryerson's English language proficiency policy opens new window requires applicants from a country where English is not the first language, or where English is an official language but not the first language, including applicants who have resided in Canada for less than four Calendar years to present proof of English proficiency at a satisfactory level.


Q.

Are Canadian citizens/ permanent residents attending secondary schools outside of Canada considered for admission as international students?

A.

Ryerson University assesses applicants for admission on the basis of the curriculum that they are completing, not their citizenship. Canadian citizens and permanent residents, however, are assessed domestic tuition fees.


Q.

Does Ryerson award transfer credits for Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (Higher Level), and General Certificate of Education (Advanced Level) subjects/ courses?

A.

Ryerson awards transfer credit on an individual basis for select programs for AP courses with an exam grade of 4 or higher, Advanced Levels with grades of 'C' or better, and Higher Level IB courses with final grades of 5 or better, and CAPE subjects with grades of III or higher. Engineering students are not eligible for these transfer credits for core and professional engineering courses.

When will students receive an offer of admission?

A.

Financial Matters

Q.

Are there any entrance scholarships for international students?

A.

Ryerson offers seven (7) International Secondary School Student Merit Scholarships, valued at $5,000 each. For eligibility criteria and application instructions, visit the Scholarships & Fees section. opens new window

Q.

Can international students hold student loans?

A.

International students may hold student loans that have been secured through their home country. Students are advised to contact the appropriate student loan processing agency in their country for further information. Ryerson participates in the US government Title IV program known as the Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFELP). The federal school code for Ryerson is G10720. Q.

How much does one year of study at Ryerson cost?

A.

The current, annual total cost of attending Ryerson including international tuition, living expenses and incidentals for most programs is approximately $35,000 CDN.

What services does Ryerson offer for international students?

A.

The International Student Services (ISS) opens new window office at Ryerson supports international students throughout their university careers. ISS provides student orientation, Peer Supporter programming, and social events.


Q.

What residence accommodation is available to international students?

A.

Ryerson has three residences on its campus. All international students admitted to Ryerson will receive special consideration for a space in residence. What cultural clubs are available at Ryerson?

A.
