Special Student Status

Students are designated Special Students if they are enrolled in one or more courses, but are not pursuing a degree. Special Student status is not required to enroll in courses offered through the G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education. Common reasons for Special Student status in day or evening courses include:

  • To attempt to qualify for admission to a degree program;
  • To meet professional association course requirements.
  • To complete a post-degree course series

Admission Policy and Procedures

Application Forms

Special Student applicants use the Ryerson Application as follows:

  • Students seeking ACC 703, ACC 706, ACC 801, ACC 803, ACC 821 or BUS 800 for CA/CGA/CMA purposes must select the “Special Business” option.
  • Students seeking admission to the Foundation of Management post-degree course series must select the “Special – Foundation of Management” option.
  • Students in all other cases must select the “Special” option.
  • Special Student status CANNOT be obtained by applying for a full-time or part-time degree program (eg. Business Management or Mechanical Engineering)

Special Student applicants are NOT required to submit a Supplementary Form.

Important Note: If you have previously been admitted as a Special Student, you do not need to submit a new application unless you have been away from studies for six consecutive semesters since admission.

If you are in doubt about your status, please contact our office to confirm prior to submitting a new application. Application fees are not refundable.

Application Dates

  • Special and Special Business applicants are encouraged to apply well before the final application date for the applicable term. Foundations of Management applicants must visit the Foundation of Management page for deadline details.
  • Amendments to applications and supporting documents received after published deadline dates will be reviewed subject to space availability.
  • Admission is not guaranteed.

Admission Requirements

Applicants seeking Special Student status must provide a detailed educational history by completing in full the “Institutions Attended” section of the application.

“Special Business”

  • Official academic transcripts of previous studies are not required.
  • Approval is required from the Ted Rogers School of Business Management, Accounting Department. Visit the Prospective Student section of the Ted Rogers School of Business Management website for details. Individual faculty members may not grant access to courses.
  • Special Business status will only be granted to applicants seeking access to ACC 703, ACC 706, ACC 801, ACC 803, ACC 821 or BUS 800. All other designation courses may only be completed through the G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education.
  • Preference wil be given to students who hold a university degree with some business background.
  • Successful completion of the prerequisite (or equivalent) for all courses is mandatory.
  • Students who wish to take BUS 800 must provide proof of successful completion of three years of a Business Degree.
  • Special Business Students may enroll in a maximum of 2 courses per term.
  • Failure to meet any of the above requirements will result in cancellation of enrollment at any time during the term.
  • The restrictions placed on Special Business Students are due to limited space and extremely high demand for courses from Ryerson degree students, who are given priority.

"Special - Foundations of Management"

Please visit the Foundations of Management page for admission requirements

“Special”

Official academic transcripts of previous studies are not required.

Written permission from the specific teaching department is required to be admitted to the “Special” option, and must be submitted to Undergraduate Admissions and Recruitment at the time of application. Please note the following exceptions:

  • The Faculty of Arts does not consider Special Students.
  • The Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Science (FEAS) requires completion of the Special Student Permission Form. The form can be found on the FEAS website. The completed form must be submitted to Undergraduate Admissions and Recruitment at the time of application.
  • The Nutrition and Food program will provide a list of approved applicants to Undergraduate Admissions and Recruitment. Please contact the program department well in advance to request approval.

Grade 12 U/M students may be admitted as Special Students to take a course, subject to receiving authorization from the teaching department of the course they wish to take and also subject to space in the desired course. Candidates must be recommended by their secondary school and will be considered on an individual basis. If the course forms part of a program to which the student is admitted, credit is applied.

Course Enrollment

"Special" and "Special Business"

  • Approval to the Special and Special Business options permits students to attempt to enroll in individual courses.  It does not guarantee, and is not meant to guarantee, enrollment in courses or admission, readmission or reinstatement to a Ryerson program.
  • Access to course(s) is subject to approval of the teaching department and availability of space in the selected course(s). Individual faculty members may not grant access to courses.
  • Prospective Special Students should note that, for some courses, no space will be available to Special Students, as preference is given to students enrolled in a Ryerson degree program.
  • Special Students are normally permitted to enroll for one to two courses per semester unless they are studying on a Letter of Permission from another university or have previously completed a degree from a recognized university.

“Special – Foundations of Management”

  • Details regarding enrollment in Foundations of Management courses will be provided in the Offer of Admission.

Course Evaluation and Student Records

  • A Special Student is eligible for evaluation in the course(s) taken and for a final grade statement from the Enrollment Services and Student Fees Office. Special Students are not eligible to obtain transfer credit or a Letter of Permission to study elsewhere.
  • A course taken as a Special Student, which an applicant subsequently applies as transfer credit to a program at Ryerson University will not be recorded as a graded course, nor will it be used in the calculation of the student's Grade Point Average (GPA). See Transfer Credit section.
  • Special Students are subject to the same academic standing requirements as students in degree, diploma, or certificate programs.
