MTCU Key Performance Indicators (KPI)

Graduation, Employment and OSAP Loan Default Rates

Ryerson graduates continue to do exceptionally well in today's job market according to a recent survey conducted for the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities. The overall employment rate for Ryerson's Class of 2009 graduates was 94.8% two years after graduation and 88.4% just six months after graduation. Ryerson's response rate for this survey was 25.4%, based on 1,115 respondents.

The Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities has also calculated graduation and OSAP loan default rates for Ryerson using existing data sources. To determine employment rates, the Ministry used data from a graduate survey conducted by the Ontario Universities' Application Centre.

The program areas shown in the table are those used by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities. Corresponding Ryerson programs are listed with each.

To maintain adequate confidentiality with respect to the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, information has not been shown in cases where the number of students is four or less.

Graduation rates, employment rates and OSAP loan default rates are being made available as part of the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities 1999-2000 OSAP policy requirements.

Graduation Rates

The Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities has calculated graduation rates by using a single entering cohort of students and determining whether or not they graduated within seven years. The methodology employed involved the selection of all newly-admitted, full-time, first-year undergraduate students on the official Fall 2003 enrolment file who had a valid student identification number and were seeking either a Bachelor's or first professional degree. This subset was then matched against the records of students who received a degree (in any program) from the same institution during the period 2004-2010.

  • The graduation rates shown understate the actual graduation rates because they do not count students who transferred to another university and then obtained a degree from that institution.
  • The graduation rates in the table indicate the percentage of newly-admitted students in first-year level on a full-time load in Fall 2003 who subsequently received a degree from Ryerson between 2004 and 2010 in any program area.

Employment Rates - University Graduate Survey

To determine employment rates of recent graduates, a survey of all Class of 2009 graduates of Bachelor's and first professional degree programs in Ontario was conducted. Graduates were asked questions regarding their employment situation six months and two years after graduation.

  • The employment rates in the table indicate the percentage of 2009 degree graduates who were employed six months after graduation and two years after graduation.

Default Rates

The 2011 default rates reflect the repayment status of students who were issued Ontario Student Loans in the 2008-2009 academic year and did not receive an Ontario Student Loan in 2009-2010, and who defaulted on their repayment obligations. Student loan recipients/defaulters have been, for purposes of calculating default rates, assigned to the last institution/program they attended in 2008-2009.

An Ontario Student Loan is in default when the Ontario government has paid the bank's claim for an inactive loan. A loan is inactive when no payments were made by the student for at least 90 days. Responsibility for recovery of defaulted accounts was transferred to private collection agencies in January 2002.

The default rates shown in the table include:

  • students in Ryerson Continuing Education certificate programs;
  • defaults on loan obligations incurred by students while at other universities or Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology in the case of students who transferred to Ryerson.

The default rates in the table indicate the percentage of students issued an Ontario Student Loan in 2008-2009 who did not receive an Ontario Student Loan in 2009-2010 and were in default.
