Thoughts on learning
The university experience is a time of taking ownership of your learning. Each faculty member develops her or his own philosophies of learning and teaching. This section of my website includes various opportunities, tips, and requirements for success.Group work? Disappointing mark?
Long after marks have been forgotten, the lessons of some assignments will be remembered. As annoying as they may be, group projects are often among the most memorable and fruitful learning experiences. Likewise, disappointing marks lead to more reflection and learning possibilities than marks that are as expected. Some thoughts on these paradoxes. More >

Information for current students
DO NOT SLIP ANYTHING under my office door or it will be lost.
My assignment due dates are intentionally not class dates. All assignments are to be submitted to the Essay box by POD249, not brought to class, handed to TA, or emailed. You may email a .pdf to the TA on or before the due date as insurance if you are worried that the paper copy may be lost or misdirected. If you do so, the email date and time will be recorded as the submission date and time. If you submit the paper in the required way, 99.9% of the time, it ends up in the right place. The Essay Box does NOT eat papers. The most common reason for not receiving a paper is that the paper was not submitted! Once in a while a paper will be date-stamped and put into the mailbox of another prof but it will turn up quickly, and the date-stamp proves when it was received. After working hard on a good paper, you may want to take the extra step to protect against that 0.1% chance.
Course outlines and policies are on Blackboard (login to http://my.ryerson.ca) for registered students. I recommend that if your paperwork is held up and you know that you will join the course in the 2nd or 3rd week, get class time and location from a classmate and attend the first lectures to avoid missing critical basic information. Please check Blackboard to determine if a Clicker will be used, and if so, please obtain and register your Clicker before the first class.
Read the course outline AND the General Course Policies documents that you will find on Blackboard. You will be penalized for formatting deductions and other deficiencies clearly outlined in these references. Writing quality is important and spelling does count.
According to Ryerson policy, current students must use their Ryerson email in correspondence with faculty. If you use another account, your email may be discarded unread. The sound rationale for this policy was explained by the university in a notification in Winter 2008.
