| Essay Writing 1: getting started |

| In this workshop, participants will discuss what it means to write an essay in a post-secondary setting, learn various ways to think about and approach the exercise of essay writing and generate effective ways to begin the process. All students are welcome but this workshop will be most beneficial to students new to the essay writing process and those who are in the early stages of writing their own essays. | |||
| Essay Writing 2: the thesis |

| Following on Essay Writing 1, this workshop will focus on the thesis statement as a central part of a good persuasive essay. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss what a thesis statement really is, how it becomes the controlling idea of the essay and ways to construct them effectively. All students are welcome but the workshop will be most beneficial to students trying to find focus at the early stages of writing. |

| Essay Writing 3: integrating sources |

| Participants in this workshop will discuss ways to effectively integrate their own insights on a topic with those of the experts in the field. Getting this balance right is an essential part of effective essay writing and one that many students find challenging. This workshop can be a good start towards this goal. All writers of research essays can benefit from this workshop. | |||
| Essay Writing 4: putting it all together |

| This workshop will focus on putting the pieces of an essay together to create the final written product. Participants will discuss issues related to the purpose of their academic writing, audience and the final form, structure and style of an effective essay. This workshop will benefit all student writers. |

| Critical reading for better academic writing |
|||
| In this workshop participants will explore the relationship between thinking, reading and writing. Using the idea of “analysis” as the foundation, we will discuss ways to make reading more active and how this will contribute to more sophisticated and effective academic writing. The workshop will benefit all student writers. |

| Effective Citation, Paraphrasing and Quoting | |||
| This workshop will engage students in discussion about how to avoid un-intentional plagiarism by learning how to use citations, paraphrases and direct quotes effectively in their writing. All students can benefit from this workshop. | |||
| Effective Revision and Editing | |||
| Many student writers neglect to devote sufficient time to the revision process and may not appreciate the importance of this step in the writing process. This workshop will emphasize the importance of revision and provide strategies for doing this effectively. All students can benefit from this workshop. | |||
| Writing a Lab Report | |||
| In this workshop participants will learn the basics of Lap Report Preparation - the purpose, structure, style and basic elements of a standard laboratory report. Students in courses where lab reports are required will benefit from this workshop. | |||
| Writing a Literature Review | |||
| Writing a literature review can be a mysterious task and will vary according to the particular assignment. In this workshop, participants will get a good overview of the basic elements involved in writing a good literature review. | |||
| Obstacles to Writing | |||
| Many writers are faced with that unhappy situation when they find it difficult to even get words on a page. This can be for a variety of reasons and, in this workshop, particpants will explore some of the common reasons for "writer's block" and ways to overcome this problem. All students can benefit from this workshop. | |||
| Common grammar errors |

| In this workshop, we will cover seven of the most common grammar errors in student writing and discuss strategies to overcome these errors. This will take place within a larger discussion about the importance of proper grammar and general tips on how to be more effective proofreaders of our own work. This workshop will benefit all students. |
| The Basics of APA Formatting |

| Participants in this workshop will learn the conventions of the APA style by engaging in discussions around why conventions are important, the various purposes of these conventions and their relationship to academic integrity. The focus will be on APA style but more broadly to academic style conventions in general. Our hope is that by giving participants an opportunity to discuss the purpose and motivation behind these rules and conventions, they will be able to apply them more effectively. |
