Every summer educators from high schools, community colleges, and universities meet over three days for workshops, demonstrations, and seminars in emerging areas of the graphic arts. Attendees focus on developing ideas for new projects that can be used immediately in the classroom. Each summer teachers come together to learn about latest technologies such as large-format inkjet, 3D printing, or augmented reality. A number of sessions are devoted to pedagogy and best practices in teaching and learning in the graphic arts.
The Annual Conference convened in recent years in Mansfield, OH (2014), Cal Poly (2015), and last year at the picturesque College of the Ozarks, Branson, MO. In 2017 we are excited to welcome you to Ryerson University, Toronto. The 2017 GCEA Conference will be hosted by the School of Graphic Communications Management, Ryerson University in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
GCEA (formerly IGAEA) is an association dedicated to sharing theories, principles, and processes related to education in graphic communications. Graphic arts educators benefit from mailings of The Communicator and The Visual Communications Journal, access to project exchange, student competitions, the Annual Conference and regional meetings. A number of incentive travel awards are available (US$500–$700) to educators participating in their first Annual Conference. Visit the GCEA home page for more details.
The theme of the conference in 2017 is Women in Print. Gender equality in the printing industry has been identified by SGIA’s initiative, Women in Print Alliance. “A diverse workforce benefits everyone in the industry. Having more women in leadership positions brings much-needed variety to the table, leading to a better outcome and stronger development for all of us,” said Maggie Stevens, SGIA. We also recognize the continued success of the Girls Who Print program. In order to reflect the majority women students in our classrooms, we seek to engage with more women role models at GCEA 2017.
An official call for papers, presentations, and workshops is announced. Do you have an idea or project that you would like to share? We are aware that many institutions require you to be a presenter in order to receive travel funding. All proposals will be carefully considered. Please use our form and send your ideas to both Donna Painter, Millersville University, and Abhay Sharma, Ryerson University. We are particularly interested in topics relating to pedagogy, and teaching and learning best practices.
