Printer Setup

This is a general overview on installing your printer. It should not replace reading the manufacturer's instructions or checking the manufacturer's internet site. Since most printers have the same external connections to your computer this module should help you get your printer up and running in no time.

Unpacking your printer

Check that the following items are included with the printer:

  1. power cord
  2. print cartridge(s)
  3. printer software
  4. Manual

Remove the packing material from around the printer. Also, check to see if the cartridge is installed. The cable that connects the printer to the computer is not usually supplied with the printer. You'll need to purchase a high-quality IEEE-1284 compliant parallel printer cable.

Turn your computer off

Connect the printer cable to the parallel port on the back of the printer and then to the computer. Plug the power cord into the printer and then into a grounded outlet.

Check Setup

Ensure that the parallel port cable is secured to both the computer and the printer. This cable usually has two screws at the end which attach to the computer. Two wire clips keep the connection secure to the printer.

Install the printer software

The printer software must be properly installed for the printer to work with your computer. The printer must first be properly set up before proceeding with the software installation. Depending on the make of your computer and printer this should be pretty straightforward. Turn both your computer and printer on. Add paper to the paper tray of the printer; 8.5x11 sheets are standard. Insert your disk with the print software and follow the software instructions.

Windows 95/98 has built in procedures to assist you in this process.

To access procedures to add a printer, double click My Computer icon on the desktop; then double click the add printer icon in this window. Always select print a test page.

Verify the Printer Set up

To ensure successful installation of the printer software:
Make sure your computer is fully set up and operational. Check that the computer is properly set up and ready to print using the instructions in the manufacture's guide. Make sure that the printer is directly connected to the computer (remove any switch boxes or other devices using the same port). Check that all cable connections are firm.

Now you're ready to print.

If in Doubt

Don't panic. Most manufactures have Internet sites and 800 numbers. Don't be afraid to call or log on the their Internet sites. They host a wealth of product-specific information, software updates and support services.
