AVIAN FLU UPDATE (H5N1)
(Note that this is not the H1N1 pandemic flu, but the MUCH more serious
avian influenza A/H5N1 that has been with us since 2003 (and for a brief time in
1997). A pandemic of this viral illness would be 200 times more severe
than the H1N1 and would exceed the worst epidemic in human history (1918
flu) by 20
times. Check this page for the latest epidemiology and outbreak
situation in Haiti.

NOTE RE POWERPOINT MATERIAL
The PowerPoint material you see in class
is mostly the same material with the same examples that are included in your
course notes. This is one reason, I do not post all the PP sets on the
Proteus site. The other reason is that if you want to pass the course you
have to DO the work yourself; it's the only way to learn the material.
You should be reading the printed material, attending class, taking notes,
joining in the discussions, and completing the exercises and analyses. I have received several requests for all powerpoint presentations to be placed on the Proteus site. This will
not happen for material that is either well covered
elsewhere in the CCDM text, the manual, or the lectures and discussions.
However, I WILL be
posting selected PP slides that illustrate particularly important topics,
especially where this has
not been completely covered in the text.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT RE PUBLIC HEALTH
PLACEMENTS
In
2010 the
Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care created 25 new Public
Health Inspection 12-week practicum positions for students. This was
announced on Tuesday (June 29, 2010).
This is part of a three year plan; it has been suggested that only students who have graduated be
accepted, as the positions will carry over to the Fall (September/October) and will
conflict with classes at Ryerson if students haven't finished
their
program.
We have also suggested that the health units post the
availability of these positions on the CIPHI website called "Position Place".
