English Language Requirements

Proof of English language proficiency is required when:

  • Applicants hold citizenship from a country where English is not the first language;
  • Or where English is an official language but not the first language;
  • Including applicants who have resided in Canada for four calendar years or less (i.e. official date of entry to Canada was on or after January 1, 2016 for fall 2020)

Requirements reflect overall scores. There are no minimum requirements for band scores (e.g. reading, writing, speaking, listening). Subject to change. Use as a guideline only.

International University Foundation Program

Applicants must achieve the test score required for their subject of major interest, as noted above.

*The MELAB is no longer offered by Michigan Language Assessment. For applicants who have written the MELAB within the last two years, the requirement is 90 for Creative Industries, Journalism, Professional Communication, Media Production and Sport Media. For all other programs the MELAB requirement is 85.

Applicants are required to inform Ryerson of the test they are writing and the date the score will be submitted to Ryerson from the test centre. Follow the instructions below:

  1. Log in to my.ryerson.ca, opens in new window and click on the RAMSS tab
  2. Select Admissions
  3. Select English Proficiency Test
  4. Select your English Proficiency* (IELTS, TOEFL [Ryerson institution code 0886], CAEL or MELAB). Indicate the date that you anticipate Ryerson will receive your score (generally 30 days after you submit your request to your testing centre)
  5. To confirm your information has been saved, refresh the page. Your chosen test and the date of submission will be listed below the Submit button

Applicants must arrange for official results to be forwarded by the applicable agency/testing centre as soon as possible directly to Undergraduate Admissions at Ryerson within application deadlines. Ryerson will not accept test results submitted by the applicant or any other means.

If Ryerson has received your test result, your Choose>Ryerson applicant portal will indicate that you passed or failed the English proficiency requirement.

New effective April 6, 2020: In an effort to support our applicants who have been impacted by test centre closures, we have extended our deadline date to provide an English language proficiency test score to June 1, 2020. Applications for admission will not be cancelled due to a lack of English language test score prior to this date. Admission decisions will continue to be processed where a test score has been received.

Deadlines

After you apply, you will receive notice to submit test information to Ryerson. This notice will be included in your Choose>Ryerson applicant portal (or you can follow the steps above). 

  • It is in your best interest to complete your English proficiency test and have the score submitted to Ryerson as soon as possible. Your application will not be considered complete until this information is received

This form may be used for one of the following reasons:

  • Ryerson received your test score with a previous application for admission
  • Your test date and/or the date Ryerson will receive your test score has changed
  • You have completed the Pearson Test of English (PTE)
  • You have completed the Cambridge English test
  • You are having technical difficulties creating your online identity/accessing your RAMSS account

If you have lived and/or studied in an English-speaking country or school, you may qualify for an exemption from a test of English proficiency. See below for further details.

You may request an exemption from providing an English Proficiency test score for one of the following reasons:

  • You have completed full-time academic studies, in English, for the last four calendar years or more (studies commenced before January 1, 2016). English was the official language of instruction for all years
  • You have completed one of the following qualifications:
    • GCE Advanced (A) Level/AS Level/AICE: English, English Language, English Literature with a FINAL grade of C or better
    • GCSE/IGCSE/GCE Ordinary Level: English, English Language, English Literature, English as a Second Language with a FINAL grade of B (“6” in reformed qualifications) or better
    • International Baccalaureate Higher Level English with a FINAL grade of 4 or better
    • International Baccalaureate Standard Level English with a FINAL grade of 5 or better
    • Advanced Placement (AP) College Board Examination in English Language and Composition or Literature and Composition with a final grade of 4 or better
  • You are applying for reinstatement or readmission to a program at Ryerson
  • You have submitted an English language proficiency test score to Ryerson Undergraduate Admissions within the last two years (with an acceptable score for your chosen program(s)
  • Other relevant reason

Please note: Ryerson will not accept English 12U, the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT), or equivalent in lieu of a test of English language proficiency.

Use this form if:

  • Your application for admission was cancelled because Ryerson did not receive your test score
  • Your application for admission was cancelled because you did not indicate to Ryerson when your test results will be received
  • Your test score does not meet Ryerson’s requirements and you intend to write another test

Are you academically qualified for an undergraduate program but lack the minimum English requirements? The Ryerson ESL Foundation Program could be for you! This program combines intensive English language instruction with undergraduate course work. Students who complete the Ryerson ESL Foundation Program are admitted to a degree program with at least one undergraduate course credit.

You can apply directly for admission to the ESL Foundation Program at any time. If your application to an undergraduate degree program is denied because your test results do not meet our requirements, consider amending your existing application or adding this as a program choice.

*Students commencing studies in the fall semester with an IELTS of 6.0 (or equivalent) will spend the winter semester taking courses offered through Ryerson's Chang School of Continuing Education for the opportunity to earn credits towards their degree program of choice prior to beginning their full-time undergraduate enrollment.
