Architecture Honours & Recognition

Award Name Award Criteria

AIA Henry Adams Award and Certificate (external link, opens in new window) 

Each year, The American Institute of Architects awards a medal and certificate of merit to the top-ranking graduating student in each architecture program accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (or CACB for Canadian schools). A certificate of merit is awarded to the second-ranking graduating student. Formerly called "The School Medal," the AIA Henry Adams Medal and Certificate program began in 1914, and was awarded for "general excellence in architecture throughout the four-year course to graduating students of architecture schools recognized by the Institute."

Alpha Rho Chi Medal (external link, opens in new window) 

Judged by the faculty of each school, the medal is presented to the graduating senior who has shown an ability for leadership, performed willing service for their school or department, and gives promise of real professional merit through their attitude and personality.

ARCC King Medal (external link, opens in new window) 

This award is given to one student per ARCC member school. Selection of recipients is at the discretion of the individual member institutions, but is based upon criteria that acknowledge innovation, integrity, and scholarship in architectural and/or environmental design research.

OAA Guild Medal

The Ontario Association of Architects Guild Medal is awarded to a student whose thesis demonstrates an exemplary response to the climate crisis.

OAA Exceptional Leadership Through Design Excellence: Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) and/or Truth & Reconciliation Award

EDI Award

Recognizes one graduate student who has demonstrated exemplary work related to the topics of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) and/or Truth and Reconciliation. 

OAA Exceptional Leadership Through Design Excellence: Sustainability Award Recognizes one graduate student who has demonstrated exemplary work related to the topics of sustainability. 

RAIC Student Honour Certificates (external link) 

The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada Honour Roll recognizes those students of an accredited professional degree program of architecture in Canada who have achieved high academic standing in the top 10% of their graduating class. The selection of the students to be placed on the honour roll is made through a process of evaluation established in the constitution or bylaws of the school.

RAIC Student Medal (external link) 

The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada Student Medal is awarded annually to a student graduating from a professional degree program in each accredited university school of architecture in Canada who, in the judgment of the faculty of the respective school, has achieved the highest level of academic excellence and/or has completed the outstanding final design project/thesis for that academic year.
