Rebecca Chen, ACS International Experience Grant recipient.  Rebecca used her grant to volunteer in Jamaica and help in building a school.

I'd like to thank you again for choosing me as the recipient of the ACS International Experience Grant. I was fortunate enough to travel to Jamaica with the Caribbean Chinese Association to assist in building a new school for the students of Riverside Basic School, in Hanover, Jamaica.

This trip was such a heartwarming and eye opening experience. It was very close to my heart for my family is from Jamaica, so to be able to give back to the country my parents and grandparents are from was very important for me. The two organizations that the CCA partnered with was Food for the Poor and Helping Hands Jamaica to make this mission possible.

I was able to walk through the old school, which held over 60 kids in a small, run down building with only two or three rooms. It demonstrated how big of an impact the project we took part in was for the community. As volunteers, we were given the tasks of hammering, painting, and screwing, and we were able to watch an empty plot of land blossom into a beautiful 1782 sq feet school. While we were on site, the members of the surrounding community would come down to the construction site to watch and even help! There were kids running around painting and helping where they were allowed. On the final day we were able to meet with the students and their families of the school, and attended the official opening ceremony where they performed songs for us to thank us for our help.

I will always remember this experience for it was everything and more than I imagined. It showed me that hard work never goes unnoticed and reminded me how privileged I am, and to always give back to those in need. Seeing the smiles of the children as they walked onto the property was more than enough as a reward. Now I know those kids now have a safe and accommodating environment for them to learn
