    This course will deal with the fundamentals of expression and interpretation in the visual arts. Students will undertake applied exercises related to the elements and principles of composition and design. Completed projects will be critiqued with reference to traditional and contemporary design issues. The course's main setting is the studio, where a variety of materials and approaches are explored.

  • MPC 103 - Art and the Classical Tradition
    This course examines the evolution of Western Art from its origins in pre-historic times to the early 19th century. Issues and context considered include: aesthetics and antiquity; classical revivals of the Renaissance; Neo-Classicism; art in the service of religion in Medieval and Baroque Europe; and the birth of individualism during the Enlightenment and the Romantic periods.

  • MPC 125 - Visual Studies II
    This hands-on workshop will provide intermediate exploration of design issues and concepts as they apply to a variety of materials and media. Students will extend their design investigations into space, sound, light, colour and form through the components of their digital, new media, film, photography and video productions.

  • MPC 201 - Concepts and Theories
    This lecture course introduces the concepts and theories that animate visual work in all media and forms, providing a foundation for students embarking upon their studies in the culture industries.   • MPC 203 - Art in the Modern World
    This course provides a contextual survey of 20th century art in the West from its roots in 1900s to its proliferation of styles in the 1960s. The modernist ideologies inherent in movements such as Conceptualism, Feminism and Postmodernism will also be examined, as will the impact of burgeoning digital technologies.

  • MPC 210 - Introduction to Visual Culture
    The study of visual culture concerns the value attributed to specific images across disciplines and media at any given moment. The meanings derived from visual images, from the smallest group interaction to the largest "world" event, depend on a variety of factors influencing the production, circulation, reception and history of images. This course invites students to consider how perception and visuality are mediated by the conditions of looking.
