The 19th century brought fresh revolutions: technology and industrialization transformed work and leisure, life and death; liberalism and revolutionary socialism challenged the old order; and science altered forever humanity's place in the universe. Yet this was also a century of ruthless imperialism and aggressive and intolerant nationalism. This period is essential for understanding our world.
