Maurice Fernandes

Maurice Fernandes is an award-winning HR professional with 20 years of experience specializing in talent acquisition, campus recruitment, employment brand, and digital media recruitment strategy. Maurice has focused his HR/Recruitment experience in the technology sector and his recruitment experience has taken him as far west as Silicon Valley and as far east as Prince Edward Island.  Maurice has spoken about HR/recruitment best practices and labour trends at a variety of conferences and campuses and contributed to articles for the Globe and Mail, Human Resources Director Canada, and the Canadian HR Reporter.  When not geeking out on HR and labour market trends, Maurice volunteers his time mentoring through Ten Thousand Coffees, the Ted Rogers School mentoring program, and can be found on a softball diamond most summer evenings. Maurice holds a bachelor’s degree from McMaster University.

Luciana Longo has been working in the career development industry for 10 years,  supporting people in transition in all phases of the career development cycle including: self-assessment/career exploration, labour market information and job search in both one on one and group formats. Her most recent experience involved coaching foreign trained professionals with mainly STEM backgrounds with their integration into the Canadian labour market. Her greatest passion, however, is supporting people by raising awareness around their strengths and talents, to discover and manifest work that gives expression to who they are.

Inclusivity in STEM Conference

On Tuesday, September 18th, the Ryerson Career & Co-op Centre is hosting  the Inclusivity in STEM Conference: Changemakers. This year’s conference will explore the definition, purpose and power of changemaking in the 21st century. Through open forum dialogue, panel discussions and case studies, this conference aims to illuminate real world challenges associated with STEM culture and examine what inclusivity means and involves, in order to transform and reimagine STEM culture.

Professionals from various sectors will be giving 15-minute tech talks showcasing how they use data science innovatively to drive their business. They will also give insight into the current trends in the industry that are influencing the talent they choose for their teams. Talks will be followed by open networking.

Biography
Adrian is an Ontario Certified Teacher with over five years of experience in the non-profit and education sector. He has created and delivered various education and employment programs for organizations such as The Scott Mission, Gomaj Community Services, YMCA GTA, and the Children's Aid Society. Adrian’s work has focused on developing mentorship programs for elementary and secondary schools, coaching youth facing barriers to employment in marginalized communities, and tutoring students in the foster care system. Adrian is a dedicated educator and continues to support the community by volunteering his time to develop youth engagement initiatives with Keystone Dance Studio in Durham Region.

As the Career Education Coordinator for the Ryerson Career & Co-op Centre, Adrian designs and delivers career-related workshops and tutorials, as well as provides career advising appointments, some of which are specifically for students in the Faculty of Science.
