In March 2015, Chulalongkorn University opened an urban agricultural learning center called Siam Green Sky (SGS) on the rooftop of the Siam Square One Shopping mall, located at the one of the busiest intersections in Bangkok. The initial investment on the roof was approximately US$ 161,700, covering an area of 2 000 m2, making it probably Thailand’s largest rooftop garden. It offers agricultural learning experiences to visitors and students free of charge, focusing on the dissemination of innovative agriculture, landscape management, art, urban ecology, and safe food production processes. SGS was designed and developed based on three main ideas: a learning center, agricultural awareness, and social networking. Here, Thai farmers’ methods are brought to the heart of the city so that urban residents can absorb some of their knowledge.
SGS also creates renewable energy from solar panels, and has a major water catchment system, helping slow the water flow in times of heavy downpour, enhancing the drainage efficiency of the area. At the same time, it reduces the heat inside the building by 3-4 °C as well as the outside temperature in the garden area by as much as 7 °C.
The rooftop garden is divided into three parts. The “innovative farming plot” covers the largest area; visitors can observe the process of making organic fertilizer from food waste, the cultivation of plants suitable for different areas, and the planting of flowers, edible plants, herbs, and rice. The “multifarious plant plot” features different plant types displayed in various sections. The “garden plants plot” highlights attractive plants that are easy to grow and maintain for those who have limited time and knowledge of cultivation.
An indoor space and a large outdoor patio are used for multiple purposes. Free workshops are held on Saturdays on topics such as how to use hydroponics systems to grow vegetables, growing rice, and vertical gardens for those living in a condominium. Additionally, every 3rd weekend of the month, a Siam Green Market is held where organic food is sold. The space has also been used to display an exhibition of works by Thai artists. Siam Green Sky, a green haven right at the heart of Siam Square, brings agricultural education to the dense urban core.

En mars 2015, l’Université Chulalongkorn a mis en place un centre d’apprentissage agricole en milieu urbain nommé Siam Green Sky (SGS) sur le toit du Centre Commercial Siam Square One, situé dans l’un des carrefours les plus animés de Bangkok. L’investissement initial pour l’installation du toit-potager s’élevait à environ 161700 US$. Couvrant une surface de 2000 m2, cela en fait probablement la toiture jardin la plus vaste de Thaïlande. Etudiants ou simples visiteurs se voient offrir gratuitement une possibilité d’apprentissage agricole mettant l’accent sur la diffusion d’une agriculture innovante, l’aménagement paysager, l’art, l’écologie urbaine, et sur des procédés de production alimentaire sûrs. De par sa conception, SGS est basé sur trois principes fondamentaux: création d’un centre d’apprentissage, sensibilisation agricole et réseautage social. Il cherche à reproduire au cœur de la ville le mode de vie des agriculteurs thaïlandais afin de permettre la transmission de leurs savoir-faire et méthodes de travail aux citadins.
En outre, SGS produit de l’énergie renouvelable à partir de panneaux solaires et dispose d’un bassin hydrographique permettant de stabiliser le niveau de l’eau en cas d’averse, assurant le bon fonctionnement du système de drainage de la zone. Par ailleurs, il permet de réduire de 3 à 4 °C la chaleur à l’intérieur du bâtiment et de faire baisser d’au moins 7 °C la température extérieure.
Le potager est divisé en trois parties. La « parcelle dédiée aux pratiques d’Agriculture Innovante » occupe la majeure partie de l’espace; les visiteurs peuvent y observer la fabrication d’engrais organique à partir de déchets alimentaires, la culture de plantes adaptées à différentes localités, la culture de fleurs, de plantes comestibles, d’herbes et de riz. La « parcelle des plantes multiples » présente une déclinaison de différents types de plantes. Le « parc de plantes de jardin » met en évidence des plantes attrayantes et faciles à cultiver et à entretenir pour ceux qui ont peu de temps et/ou des savoir-faire limités dans le domaine agricole.
Un espace intérieur et un grand patio extérieur sont utilisés à des fins multiples. Des ateliers gratuits et ouverts au public sont organisés le samedi sur des sujets tels que comment exploiter la culture hors-sol pour produire des légumes, comment cultiver du riz dans un jardin et enfin comment mettre en place des jardins verticaux pour ceux qui vivent en copropriété. En outre, chaque troisième week-end du mois, un marché vert nommé « Siam Green Market » proposant de la nourriture biologique est organisé. L’espace a également été utilisé pour présenter une exposition d’œuvres d’artistes thaïlandais. Siam Green Sky, havre de verdure inhabituel en plein cœur de Siam Square, ouvre des perspectives d’éducation à l’agriculture dans un contexte intra-urbain très dense
