Project Description: (version française ci-dessous)

How can a parking garage become a locale to relax, green the city, showcase the regional horticulture, and act as a gateway to the city while providing parking for the historic urban core? The design strategies implemented in Jardin de la Duche achieve all of this.

Since the 1980s, the small Swiss town of Nyon had wanted an underground parking garage. In 2004 a city-sponsored competition was launched to design this park on top of a new parking garage for a sloping site at the edge of Lake Geneva. The landscape architect Ruth Vorlet, teamed with Paola Alfani, won the competition. The accessible design features both an elevator from the garage to the highest portion of the park and a switchback pedestrian ramp that runs throughout the sloping site. The park provides a spectacular view of Lake Geneva below, creating a visual link between the historic town and the lake.

Completed in 2009, there were many challenges to the implementation of this landscape design. The technical difficulties of the project included preventing the possibility of soil erosion along an extremely steep slope, requiring the placement of avalanche barriers. In addition, the existing soil from the old garden was revealed to have contaminants, requiring replacement with new soil.

Provinyon vineyards provided a sample of local varietal grapevines for the site. Forty-seven rows of grapevines evoke the landscape of a vineyard, and also represent the forty-seven municipalities (communes) that are combined into the district of Nyon. The edible landscaping also includes fruit trees, bushes and other plantings that would be common in a kitchen garden. These aid in preventing soil erosion while highlighting the historical use of this land as a community garden and, before that, an orchard.

The path at the top of the slope begins the promenade below the town castle – one can stop there and gaze across the landscape towards the lake beyond. Punctuating this top walkway, before the ramp begins, are three long benches, each one shaded by a trellis canopy that is integral to its design and flanked by low bollard lighting fixtures that enable evening use. Perennial plants and shrubs add to the colour and texture of the garden and a portion of the landscape is planted as a meadow, adding to the pleasure of the vista towards the lake.
