De-Escalating Potentially Violent Situations

De-escalating Potentially Violent Situations is an intensive all-day training session open to all community members, including Ryerson students, faculty and staff. Using a combination of in-depth discussion and interactive, scenario-based training, participants will gain the knowledge and develop the skills to recognize, assess, de-escalate and respond to potentially violent situations, while prioritizing personal safety. Sessions can be designed to respond to specific situations.

Participants will come away with:

  • a greater awareness of how anger and violence interplay;
  • knowledge and skills to recognize, assess, de-escalate and respond to potentially violent situations;
  • an understanding of how to be assertive, use interpersonal communication to one’s benefit and assess and leverage one’s own individual communication style; and
  • stronger problem-solving skills.
