On Sept. 23, 2021, Prof. Anna Triandafyllidou, the Canada Excellence Research Chair in Migration and Integration, received a doctorate honoris causa from the University of Liège, Belgium, at the university’s 2021-2022 academic start ceremony.

The University of Liège awarded the honorary degree in recognition of Triandafyllidou’s significant work as a world-renowned specialist in immigration issues. In their press release, the university cites the importance of forces of change in addressing global challenges, and that we must give a special place “to migrants who, deprived of opportunities where they are, do not hesitate to risk everything to reach their full potential.”

In expressing her appreciation, Triandafyllidou commented, “This is a true honour coming from the University of Liège. Liège is leading the way in supporting critical research and debate on migration matters. They have hosted many important conferences on the subject, and CEDEM-ULiège assumed the role, in 2022, of coordinating institute of IMISCOE – Europe's largest network of scholars in the area of migration.”

Triandafyllidou received her honorary doctorate alongside two other internationally known professors: Philippe Aghion, a professor at Collège de France and Gérald Bronner, a professor at the University of Paris-Diderot.

Preceding the ceremony, Triandafyllidou gave a talk Migration and Membership after the Pandemic Crisis and was joined in debate with Roberta Perna, Marie Curie and Hassan Bousetta, all scholars with the Centre for Ethnic and Migration Studies (CEDEM), University of Liège. The debate was moderated by CEDEM director Marco Martiniello.
