The Centre for Urban Energy (CUE) turns 10 this year, so we thought it a good time to look back on some of the highlights from an eventful decade at the centre – and in the wider Canadian energy sector. Presented in chronological order, these were the 10 most-read posts on our website over the course of the past 10 years. We hope you enjoy the recap!

Energy has remained out of sight and out of mind for the majority of Ontarians, despite being so critical to our day-to-day lives. Policy researchers Sarah Marchionda and Sean Conway made the case for improved energy literacy. 

May 12, 2014

The ice storm that battered Southern Ontario in December 2013 affected over 600,000 customers and left some without power for up to 10 days. CUE convened a roundtable with key stakeholders to help prepare for future extreme weather events.

The world’s first pole-top energy storage system, which aimed to improve reliability, further integrate renewables and enable the adoption of electric vehicles, was unveiled by Glen Murray, then Ontario minister of the environment and climate change. 

Sept. 21, 2016

CUE joined with Toronto Hydro to test a homegrown utility-scale battery system in the heart of the city, the first time this kind of research had been conducted in an urban setting.

Carter Li, CEO and cofounder of Clean Energy Zone company SWTCH, was awarded the 2017 Lieutenant Governor's Visionaries Prize in Scientific and Technological Innovation for "fighting climate change with a community-based platform for electric-vehicle charging."

Jan. 16, 2018

Clean Energy Zone member Peak Power came up with a solution that combined predictive machine-learning software and energy storage to reduce the strain felt by electrical utilities during peak times.

CUE's novel pole-top energy storage collaboration was included in the Canadian Electricity Association's Centre of Excellence, an initiative dedicated to celebrating innovative projects from across Canada positively shaping the country's collective energy future.

Jan. 16, 2019

Argentum Electronics, founded by Ryerson student Bolis Ibrahim, won the sixth edition of the N100 tech startup competition. The first prize was a $250,000 investment from Northumberland Community Futures Development Corporation. 

July 30, 2019

CUE hosted the fourth annual NSERC Energy Storage Technology Network Week, engaging over 160 researchers, industry leaders and government representatives from Canada, Brazil, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States.
