X-ray Safety

X-rays are used across Toronto Metropolitan University for both research and teaching applications. TMU’s X-ray Safety Program, administered by the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) radiation safety officer, is designed to assist all users of X-ray sources in meeting the legislative requirements and to protect students, faculty, staff and visitors from damaging exposure. The  (google doc) X-ray Safety Program Manual (external link)  outlines the requirements and procedures established by the university for work with X-rays.

Getting started

Applying for a permit

All work conducted by university members with X-ray sources on university premises or under the control of the university requires an X-ray Safety Permit.

Researchers and lab managers requiring a permit should complete an X-ray Safety Permit application.

Once you have applied for a permit, contact the radiation safety officer so they can conduct a risk assessment. Get in touch at ehs@torontomu.ca or 416-979-5000, ext. 554212.

Training

Training is a key component of the X-ray Safety Program and is mandatory for all users working with X-rays to complete prior to the start of work. Training is available online through D2L. To sign up for training, follow the D2L eLearning enrollment instructions. Once your online training is complete, you will be provided with a certificate that should be emailed to your supervisor.

Setting up your lab to work with X-ray systems

From obtaining X-ray equipment to registering with the Ontario Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development (MLTSD), setting up your lab is an important process in making sure proper controls are in place to provide for a safe working and teaching environment. The EHS team can support you through this process. Please notify the radiation safety officer at 416-979-5000, ext. 554212 or ehs@torontomu.ca of your intent to obtain an X-ray device as soon as possible.

Registration and inventory

All X-ray systems not regulated by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission must be registered with the MLTDS prior to use, and this registration must be amended should the unit be moved or disposed of. To register your X-ray device, contact the radiation safety officer at ehs@torontomu.ca or 416-979-5000, ext. 554212.

Getting an optically stimulated luminescence dosimeter (OSLDs)

Individuals working with some X-ray sources will be required to wear an optically stimulated luminescence dosimeter (OSLD), also known as a personal dosimeter or radiation badge.

Review information on getting an optically stimulated luminescence dosimeter (OSLDs).
