The infirmity of the human body and the dread of disease, physical pain and mental suffering are at the core of human experience.

Which diseases threatened people’s lives in the past? What kinds of approaches developed in different cultural and social contexts to hold diseases at bay? In HST 777 you will analyze both written sources and material culture remains to learn about how and why medical knowledge and practice changed when they passed from the ancient Near East to Greece and Rome, to the Islamic world and eventually to medieval Europe.
