Mature Students: How to Apply

Teacher assisting students in learning

If you do not possess the minimum admission requirements (i.e. a high school diploma with an overall average of 75%), you may be considered for admission if you meet all the following requirements:

  • You are 21 years of age by December 31 of the year in which you will begin studies;
  • You have been away from formal education for at least two years;
  • You are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or are sponsered by a Canadian government agency;
  • You have completed, or are in the process of completing, all subject prerequisites with grades of 75% or higher.

It’s important to be aware of the following:

  • The Midwifery Education Program (MEP) is very competitive and has a limited enrolment. There are approximately 45 applicants accepted into the MEP program at each site every year.
  • Successful applicants usually have completed one or more years of university or have equivalent experience before applying.
  • Grades are only one of the components reviewed for entry into this rigorous and rewarding program.
  • This program is not available to international students.
  • February 1st is the deadline to submit all required application documents.
  • Applicants with in-progress prerequisite subject(s) must present final or midterm grades by the February 1 deadline.

There are various ways mature students can achieve the Grade 12 U/M level prerequisite courses to be considered for admission to the program, including through:

Requirements:

  • A minimum of 75% in each of the four mandatory high school courses:
    • Grade 12 U English (ENG4U preferred)
    • Biology (SBI4U)
    • Chemistry (SCH4U)
    • One Grade 12 U or M course in Canadian World Studies or the Social Sciences and the Humanities (i.e. history, sociology anthropology, psychology, family studies, geography, law.)

Keep in mind that due to the competition for entry into this limited enrolment program, candidates may require more than minimum grade averages to gain entrance to the program in any given year.

Step 1:  Submit an online application form. Visit Applications and Related Forms for details on which form to use.

Step 2: Submit/Upload Required Documents

  • Once you have received an email acknowledgement of your application from Toronto Metropolitan University, and you have successfully activated your TMU Online Identity, you should begin the process of submitting your transcripts and supporting documents through your ChooseTMU Applicant Portal, as applicable.
  • Please visit the Document Submission page to determine what documents you are required to submit and how to submit them.

Applications and required documents must be received by February 1.

Midwifery Self-ID and Admissions Survey

The MEP uses the Midwifery Self-ID and Admissions Survey to gather information on applicants' clinical placement region preferences and their desire to participate in the voluntary Equity Admissions Self-ID and/or Indigenous Admissions Processes. Further information in the three sections of the Survey can be found below.

The Equity Admissions Self-ID

The Equity Admissions Self-ID is used to promote equitable representations of Indigenous, Black, Persons of Colour (IBPOC) and/or racialized people in the MEP's interviews for admission. Further information on this process can be found on our website here: The Equity Admissions Self-ID. Applicants who wish to self-ID can do so by completing this voluntary section of the Survey.

The Indigenous Admissions Process

The Indigenous Admissions Process (IAP) is designed to counter some of the systemic disadvantages that may affect Indigenous applicants' access to the MEP. Further information on this process can be found on our website here: The Indigenous Admissions Process. Applicants who choose to self-identify as Indigenous, First Nations, Métis, or Inuit can indicate that they wish to participate in the IAP by completing this voluntary section of the Survey.

Clinical Placement Region Preference

Toronto Metropolitan University places students in clinical placements in two different regions: the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and the Greater Ontario Area (GOA). Placement regions are described here: TMU Affiliated Teaching Practices. Applicants must indicate their clinical placement region preferences by completing this required section of the Survey.

It is your responsibility to read all the letters we post to your My Communications page, accessible via the ChooseTMU Applicant Portal. It is also your responsibility to track your application status under My Application Status.

Personal Interviews

  • Interviews are conducted online.
  • Applicants are asked a series of interview questions and the recorded answers are reviewed by the assessor.
  • Interviews typically focus on a number of areas, including:
    • Motivation to become a midwife
    • Qualities such as empathy, responsibility, flexibility, and self-reflexivity.
    • Awareness of the reality and demands of being a midwifery student and a midwife in Ontario.
    • Skills such as communication, critical thinking, and problem solving.

Post Interview Process

  • After the interview stage is completed, offers of admissions will be made to approximately 45 successful candidates in early May. Candidates are notified of their admission decisions through their ChooseTMU account.
  • A select number of applicants who were not granted admission may be placed on a waiting list.
  • All waiting lists are automatically dissolved at the beginning of the school year (end of the first week of classes). So, if you have not heard from us by then, and are still interested in the MEP at Toronto Metropolitan University, please reapply for admission for the following year.
