Annual Checklist for Midwifery Students

Keep your education on track by following the checklists below for each year of the Midwifery Education Program.

Welcome to Toronto Metropolitan University! Follow these steps to begin your studies in the Midwifery Education Program (MEP).

  1. Return your signed Offer of Admission to the MEP by email to jcabanat@torontomu.ca by June 1.
  2. During the month of June you will receive an invitation to a mandatory Transfer Credit information session.
  3. Review transfer credit information in the  (PDF file) Policy & Information Handbook. Hold off on submitting your transfer credit applications until the Transfer Credit information session.
  4. You will receive an orientation package by email in the summer which will include the following three forms. Complete the forms and submit via email to jcabanat@torontomu.ca:
  • Photo Consent Form
  • Student Declaration of Insurance
  • Student Information Form (due in early August, once your TMU ID is available)

Placement Requirements Instructions 

Begin to collect your placement requirements in June. Requirements consist of:

  1.  (PDF file) Police Reference Check (PRC), including Vulnerable Sector Screening. If you are a GTA resident, you must request the unique agency code from the MEP office by contacting midwiferyplacements@torontomu.ca. Students who live in other municipalities or provinces can request a letter from the MEP office to provide to their local Police Services. Please contact midwiferyplacements@torontomu.ca to request the PRC or letter.

Full-Time Students 

Complete the requirements and then upload to, and make an appointment with Verified by Synergy Gateway (external link)  by August 8.

Part-Time Students

Complete the requirements and then upload to, and make an appointment with Verified by Synergy Gateway  (external link)  prior to entering MWF 150 Introduction to Midwifery (normally second year). 

Orientation Module

Complete the Midwifery Education Program Orientation Module and submit your certificate of completion to mep@torontomu.ca by August 15.

Orientation Events 

Attend both of the mandatory academic orientation sessions on August 29 and August 30

In your orientation sessions you will meet key contacts like your instructors, learn about your curriculum and meet other students.

  1. Complete the Occupational Health & Safety Awareness Training.
  2. Submit a complete  (PDF file) Placement Requirements Record with supporting documentation to the Verified by Synergy Gateway (external link)  and book your appointment by November 15th. Incomplete documentation will result in added fees.
  3. Synergy Verified has created the  (PDF file) Pre-Placement Requirement Clearance Information Midwifery Education Program checklist (opens in new window)  to assist you when seeking a healthcare provider for serology testing to identify immunity.
  4. Purchase a headset to attend clinical tutorials.
  5. Students allocated to Winter Normal Childbearing (NC) placements will be enrolled in the course in the first week of December and students allocated to Spring/Summer Normal Childbearing (NC) placements will be enrolled in the first week of April. If you are receiving OSAP this may impact you. Make sure to consult the Student Financial Assistance Office with any questions you may have.

Keep originals of all documents in case they are required during your clinical placement. Completion of the Placement Requirements Record is mandatory to participate in clinical placements. If practice requirements are incomplete by the deadline for submission, entry to clinical activities will be delayed and/or the student may be dropped from the course.

  1. In early April, attend the web-conference on orientation to 3rd year courses. You will receive an invitation to participate via your University email.
  2. In late spring, complete and submit the Request for Interprofessional Placements I & II form which will be sent to your University email.
  3. Register for ALARM  upon receipt of email from the MEP with instructions -normally in July or August.
  4. Submit a complete  (PDF file) Placement Requirements Record with supporting documentation to the Verified by Synergy Gateway (external link)  and book your appointment by August 8th. Incomplete documentation will result in added fees.
  5. Synergy Verified has created the  (PDF file) Pre-Placement Requirement Clearance Information Midwifery Education Program checklist (opens in new window)  to assist you when seeking a healthcare provider for serology testing to identify immunity.

  3. Register to take the Canadian Midwifery Registration Exam (CMRE) (external link)  exam (typically, students need to register before mid-March for the May exam).
  4. Get organized to register with the College of Midwives of Ontario (external link) .
  5. Apply to graduate!
