Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has launched its first annual student paper challenge in partnership with Ryerson University. The purpose is to foster a stronger relationship between academia and the government in migration policy, as well as contribute to innovative research by young scholars.

Ryerson students are invited to submit research papers or policy proposals on a subject related to IRCC’s mandate in areas such as immigration, refugees, and/or citizenship.

The challenge is open to full- and part-time students in fourth year or at the master’s and PhD levels. Papers will be evaluated and graded by professors from Ryerson, as well as public servants from IRCC. Submissions can be made individually or co-authored, be part of the student’s course work and students can submit multiple papers.

In addition, papers must:

  • Be written in English or French;
  • Have a cover page which includes only the following: title, student number(s), and submission stream(s) (fourth-year undergraduate, master’s or PhD);
  • Include an abstract or executive summary (no longer than one page, double-spaced);
  • Be double-spaced in size 12 Times New Roman font type with regular margins;
  • Not exceed 20 pages in length (including abstract/executive summary, citations, images, charts, references, and appendices but excluding cover page);
  • Be referenced using the American Psychological Association (APA) style;
  • Be submitted as a PDF document;
  • Not identify the author’s name.

Prizes include a certificate of achievement, a $500 bursary to each of the top policy papers and winning students will present their papers to IRCC staff and senior management in Ottawa (travel and accommodation costs will be covered by IRCC). Students may also be offered an employment opportunity with IRCC.

Submit papers to IRCC.Students-Etudiants.IRCC@cic.gc.ca by February 28, 2018 at 11:59 EST. Questions regarding the challenge can also be forwarded to the same address. Selected students will be notified via e-mail by April 30, 2018.
