Top 5 things to do at Alumni Week

The university community is invited to explore a lot of fun, engaging virtual events during the week!

There will be a little something for everyone to enjoy at Alumni Week.

Alumni Week, taking place virtually September 27 to October 2, will be an opportunity for the university community and alumni to enjoy talks with award-winning journalists and authors, faculty-based demonstrations and panels, alumni award ceremonies and a virtual day camp the whole family can enjoy.

Sept. 27, 1:00 - 2:00 p.m.: Keynote: Naomi Klein — This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. the Climate

Moderator Puninda Thind will be speaking to award-winning journalist, columnist and best-selling author Naomi Klein about how climate change is a civilizational wake-up call, a powerful message delivered in the language of fires, floods, storms and droughts. Klein argues that confronting it is no longer about changing the light bulbs, it’s about changing the world—before the world changes so drastically that no one is safe. Either we leap—or we sink.

Sept. 28, 5:30-7:00 p.m.: Election Aftermath: Democratic Action and Accountability

In mid-pandemic, amid social discontent and environmental disruption, are we holding politicians and Parliamentary institutions accountable? Hosted by the Faculty of Arts and moderated by Visiting Practitioner and Toronto Star political columnist Martin Regg Cohn, this event will be an opportunity to bring your questions about Canada’s 44th election.

Sept. 29, 4:00 - 5:00 p.m.: President’s Session: Vision 2030

Join President and Vice-Chancellor Mohamed Lachemi as he shares Vision 2030 and Ryerson’s priorities for 2020 through 2030. 

Sept. 30, 12:30 - 1:00 p.m.: Book Talk: Moon of the Crusted Snow with Waubgeshig Rice

Join a book talk with author, journalist and alumnus, Waubgeshig Rice (Journalism, ‘02). Waubgeshig will discuss his national bestselling novel, Moon of the Crusted Snow: A Novel (external link) . The event will be moderated by Duncan McCue, the School of Journalism’s Rogers Journalist in Residence. 

The book is about a small northern Anishinaabe community that goes dark with winter looming. Cut off, people become passive and confused. Panic builds as the food supply dwindles. While the band council and a pocket of community members struggle to maintain order, an unexpected visitor arrives, escaping the crumbling society to the south. Soon after, others follow.

Oct. 1, 8:00 -9:30 p.m.: Ryerson Athletics - Ryerson Rams Men’s Basketball Game

Come out for a night on the court! Watch an intrasquad game showcasing the 2021-22 roster. There will also be an opportunity to get to know the team and head coach David DeAveiro.
